Honest question for the people powering their house with an EV during an outage. How long does the battery last? I think that's what most people are getting at with the can you charge it angle, not necessarily that it'll be in your driveway uncharged before the storm.

I have a powerboost and powered my house. I used about 1/3 of the tank over the first 26 hour period. Finding fuel wasn't really hard, but also wasn't convenient. I just drove 15 minutes further from my office.

I will say the shopping center next to me has an EV charger and the lot was completely full with people waiting to charge. I'm talking 30+ cars waiting.

I think it would be great to have that feature. Not for a 3 day power outage, but for that 4hr outage or even a 20 minute outage. I keep my EV plugged in when I am home so it would always be ready to power the house without even needing to plug it in if it had that capability.

Sure it won't be the perfect solution for a hurricane or other extreme situation.

This has a 175 kw battery so how fast will you consume that. I used 1500kw last month in our house

And surely you can predict weather enough to make sure you are always charged. Look, ive done the EV thing. Tesla lost 12% battery PER DAY, sitting in driveway during hot summer. You're doing EV wrong if this is what you are experiencing. I bet you also only charge your phone whenever it gets critically low on battery instead of actually charging it overnight every night so you always start your day with a full battery. BTW, you would have had less than 1% battery drain per day and even per week if you actually put the Tesla into sleep mode instead of having AC preconditioning engaged if that's what you really wanted. But something tells me you didn't want this and also didnt bother to RTFM.

The reality is people like us that actually come prepared can fully realize the advantages of an EV with a huge battery pack much the same way people already come prepared with extra food and extra gas storage. We live in the modern era where we can predict days and even weeks ahead of time to prepare for any bad weather.

I prepared myself a few days ahead of the 2021 Texas winter storm by making sure my Tesla was charged to 100% by the time rolling blackouts happened. And while everyone else in my neighborhood was freezing their ass off overnight in their homes I was sleeping comfortably in my Tesla in my garage at 75 degrees.

170 kwh battery

Here are some rough estimates:
Fridge - 500ish watts
Window Unit - 1500 watts
TV -125 watts
Modem + Wifi - 50 watts
5 cell phones - 25 watts (averaged out charging needs for a family of 5 smartphones)
10 light LED bulbs - 75 watts
Misc appliances - 1000 watts

That's a total of 3275 watts. You could run all of that nonstop for 51.9 hours with a 170kwh battery and that would be the equivalent of a pretty large household (~2400 kwh per month)

In summer my 3/2, 2000 sq ft house built in 1942 uses about 2000-2200 kwh and that's with the AC sometimes running hours and hours trying to keep up.

Point is, in an emergency it's a pretty useful amount of power.

I agree that's very useful. And better than what 99% of people have.

But, it's inadequate if it's your sole plan for hurricane/severe weather preparation, IMO.

Being conservative, you'd probably only be able to power your house for 36ish hours to leave yourself enough range to find somewhere to charge it or to get out of dodge. Again, useful and better than most. But with the amount of outages we've had recently and with how long they last, I'm looking for a different solution than my truck and it will power my house for 72+ hours.
