Daughter is about to turn 16 so she is getting my current car (2018 Toyota Camry XSE). I am really wanting to get a Supra, but my wife is not thrilled at the idea of a two seater (thinks it is impractical) with a family. I don't disagree, but we still have her GX460 if we need to go somewhere as a family.

Anyway...anyone have experience with both (or either) the Supra or RCF? What are the pros/cons?

Full disclosure, I have not driven either. Plan to do that soon.

Supra will be faster and much easier to make more faster, if that is your thing. It also shares a bunch of parts with the BMW Z4. RCF is more of a touring car. It's nicer inside, but heavy, sluggish and just not that exciting. Personally, with a family, I would just get an m340 sedan or 440 grand coupe. Both of which have a the same BMW B58 motor as the supra and can be just as speedy.

The RC F will have Toyota reliability vs the Supra will have BMW reliability.

Take that for what it's worth.

have you considered the IS 500 F?

B58 is a pretty reliable motor. Have you seen the Tundra issues, lately?

I'd get a Supra
I have a contact in Houston that can get you one at a good price
to me having a BMW engine is a positive these days

The 5.0 in the RC-F is the UR engine designation, so it's built on the same architecture as the previous generation Tundra's 5.7L. The first iteration was a 4.6L in the LS sedans in the mid 2000's.

I'd say that the engine is well proven.

RC F looks great. Not fun or engaging at all.

Of the two, get a 3.0 Supra.

IS 500 is the real play, though.

I've had a 2024 3.0 Supra for about a couple months now and was hooked up with aggiepaintrains contact. It was a smooth transaction and I had to come from BCS to houston to get it.

The car overall is pretty fast and fun to drive. Handles very well.
The electronics are a little quirky but I'm still learning about it. Yes it's a small car with all engine and not a lot of room inside but a coupe was what I was looking for.

Wish it had remote start and an outside button to open the rear hatch but those are small things compared to what I get overall in the car.

Hope this helps some.

I'd go RCF simply because the Supra is ugly AF. The V-8 makes it an even easier choice.

I had not considered the IS500, mainly because I was looking for a coupe. Maybe I need to reconsider...Maybe a trip to Sewell this weekend. Appreciate everyone's responses

Really appreciate this info. I'll have to test drive one here to see my thoughts before I get too serious.

Not sure I'd be allowed back in the house for a while if I came home with one of those!

I bought an IS500 last month and it has been great. I really wanted a Blackwing CT5-V in a manual but my wife won't learn manual and we were looking for an extra car that won't be daily driven (at least not yet). We have 3 young kids (no car seats anymore) so we wanted a semi-usable back seat just in case. Reliability was also at the top of the list. Thought about an auto Blackwing but my wife has a 2023 CT4 Sport (not a V) and I don't get a "well-built" and "reliable" feeling about it even though it handles really well.

Reliability and the legendary V8 led me to the IS500. Had to test drive a IS350 because two dealers close to me did not have any 500's on their lots. I thought about a used LC500 for the V8 but wife talked me into the 500 since it is not as flashy and has four doors. I think I would have preferred the GS F if they still made it. There weren't many used GS F models for sale (that one in the classifieds recently looks really good).

Reviews online about the IS500 are pretty accurate about it having a relatively quiet exhaust and transmission that seems like it could be better. The tech and interior is dated but that is more of an appeal to me. I will use the CD player!

I did not like the price difference from an IS350 to a IS500 for essentially just upgrading to the V8 but went for it anyways. You will probably have to get the fully loaded Performance Premium with the BBS wheels since it seems like that is all Lexus is putting out right now. 2025 version will have power folding mirrors and may be the last year before they go turbo.

IS500 is less sporty than the RC-F. Half second slower to 60 than a stock Supra. Do you want a sports car or a fast Camry

I just got a 2024 BMW X4 M40i, it has the b58tu engine and I love the damn thing. Paired with the transmission it is so much fun to drive I couldn't imagine how fun a Supra would be to drive. Once out of warranty the path to modify the engine is also easy and relatively cheap.

Lexus will be good but I'd bet sluggish compared to Supra. Go drive both. Give a bmw sedan with a b58 a try if your options are open. Some of the newer bmws are coming with the b58tu2 engine and the jury is still out on those. B58 and b58tu are good to go.

New car shopping is fun, enjoy it!

Heading north of $80k with another car purchase and 8 years of college knocking on the door makes me nervous.

Of course, my son is heavily invested in this because he thinks he is getting this car when he turns 16. He'd lose his mind if I came home with a Porsche.

Are you me?

I'm on a campus visit to A&M right now for my HS Jr while the wife and HS Fr are out shopping. I'm browsing BaT while we wait for info sessions and she keeps pointing out the 718 and 981 Cayman/Boxter while I keep hearing about the price of dorms, meal plans, etc. and then multiplying by two.

I want a C8 but my wife and financial advisor frown on that. Buy a low mileage 981…?

Over $100K if you get a flat 6. Don't settle for the 4 banger.

This is the answer.

But get a 2022 or earlier. The updated front on the 23 models is kinda fugly.

Jr College for 1/3rd the price for 2-years then send them to a A&M. Win, Win Win

You get the better car, kids still get degree from A&M, kids get out of college with no debt.

It doesn't have to be a 2024... and, don't you love your son?

8 years of college? No one pays for college anymore. What? You voting Republican? /S

I'm not saying the Japanese designer has a Koi pond, but I'm not saying he doesn't either
