My 13 f150 and wife's 21 expy both have about 90k miles and I am looking at changing the transmission fluid. Both Ecoboost engines, and wife's transmission is the 10 speed. At around 50k miles hers went in to shop for rough shifting. They reprogrammed and did some other stuff but don't believe they changed the fluid. Still has the known 10 speed hard shifting occasionally.

Doing some reading online, there doesn't seem to be a dipstick on these transmissions which makes verifying post change level hard. Additionally, it sounds like about 8 quarts is the standard refill amount from some other sites I have read. Can anyone verify?

What have y'all done to overcome this dip stick issue? Is changing the fluid even necessary in these closed systems? Either way, I'd appreciate some lessons learned and insight. Looking to take advantage of auto zones 20% off deal right now to buy the necessary supplies.

There's no such thing as lifetime fluid.

The most I'd do is drain the pan while the fluid is at ambient temp and refill the same amount. At this mileage I would not attempt a full drain and fill and instead periodically (every oil change) continue to drain and refill the pan until fluid looks pink. Also invest in a good transfer pump for a clean and easy refill.

Double check with the dealer, but those transmissions had an aluminum trash can and steel clutches, Ford ended up beefing up the can since over time the clutches would cause wearing that led to slippage. I wouldn't get involved in a fluid change if that's the case.

Yes this is all I was going to do. Whole system is something like 13 quarts but a pan drop and filter change seems to be about 7-8.

Ok. You're talking about the 10 speed correct? The hard shifting was damn near out of the gate when we bought it.

Yes. 10 speed.
This guy explains it well and I'd refer to his videos for anything ford related.

In my inboard boat, I pump out the transmission fluid and measure the removed fluid. Add back new ATF equal to the amount removed.

I don't believe that's an option on these

This dude is a real pro. He's always on there pointing out Ford design defects.

Do not overfill.

I took mine in at about 120k. The mechanic assigned it to his most junior guy because "it's an easy job". They over filled it and my transmission overheated on the drive home.

Had to tow it back. They drained the excess. I sold it a month later.

I did this for my Pacifica but the idea is the same.

Buy a 12ish quart storage container. Use this to drain transmission fluid into. Once empty, take container to a flat surface and mark on the outside with a permanent marker the leveln on all 4 sides.

Drain old fluid, clean it out and then fill to markings. Then pour fluid back into transmission. Essentially easy way to measure out what was taken and put back in.

I did it on my 2010. I used a fluid evacuator like This one and measured the amount I took out.

Refilling it can suck and instead of hand pumping it with a manual pump that connects to the fluid bottle I used a funnel that connects to the bottle and extended the hose.

I was under the truck holding the hose in position and had my son pour about a quart at a time.
