Maybe Discount tire is slipping

Had a couple tire issues yesterday and my experience at discount (whom I am a lifelong customer of) was subpar. Which honestly has been the case the last few times.

Had a low pressure warning on the right rear. Wasn't real low and that one always seems lowest with weather changes so was not too worried. Didn't have time to haul out the compressor in the morning so I went with it. Right rear was at 26 and the others were 30 or 32.

Got to my appointment and noticed a nail in the right rear. Ok. Gotta stop on the way home. Completed my appointment and started to drive away. Warning was in obviously, then suddenly it populated numbers and the front right was at 3. Limped back to my appointment and borrowed his compressor to fill. Drove straight to discount that is my normal store.

The right rear nail was an obvious fix. Fr held pressure all the way and passed the underwater test. They had no explanation for it either.

Ask twice for them to make sure they checked all the tire pressures. They said they did.

This is what I left the store with. I mean really how hard is it to fill the tires correctly? Was really noticeable this visit that the workers seems to absolutely not care as they ambled around the bays.

Not sure what the next best option is. Guess I'll at least try a different discount store to start.

I'm a little confused about the exact details of the story but it sounds like it's your vehicle's TPMS more than it is Discount Tire.

I went to my parents house in Waco a few weeks ago and it was a really cold day and my tire pressure was down to 29 psi which is enough to set off the warning which it says - air up to 37 psi to make the warning go away.

Back home in Galveston, tires all show 36 psi and everything is fine (2020 Jeep Wrangler JLUR).

During the big Texas freeze in February 2021, it was cold enough that my tire low pressure warning was on and wouldn't go off until things warmed up a week later.

What I figured out on the Jeep Wrangler is that the low pressure warning comes on around 32 psi but won't go off until the pressure exceeds 37 psi.

The other thing I learned after getting new tires at Discount Tire back in June is that the data in the onboard display takes a few minutes to update after you get new tires.

So if you were driving away from Discount Tire and saw a number that was totally wrong, it might just be that your computer display hasn't been updated yet.

The guys at Discount Tire showed me with a real tire pressure gauge that the tires were just fine, it was my TPMS that needed to update itself. Which it did after a few more minutes than what I thought it should take.

That did occur to me. But they showed quite different numbers when I got to discount. So even if they are off, I would expect the the off amount is consistent.
Honestly more concerned about how everyone there acted. The counter guys are more worried about upselling than really helping. The shop guys look disinterested and totally not caring about the work. Something is different.


Also still trying to figure out how a tire goes from 35psi to 3 in a few hours and shows absolutely no indications of a problem. And has kept pressure all of today as well


AND most annoyingly, the fact that apparently you have to take an Infiniti to the stupid dealer to turn off the flat tire warning. Don't think it is going away. Have driven over 150 miles in 24 hours.

Yeah, I get it.

Funny story from June when I got my new BFG KO3s to replace the factory BFG KO2s on my Wrangler. The guys doing the work were going to replace my wiper blades but they couldn't figure out how to access the rear wiper blade without taking off the spare tire mounted on the rear of the vehicle and attempting to disassemble the rear brake light bracket.

Luckily, their manager showed them that they could simply open the rear tailgate door and access the rear windshield wiper without disassembling anything.

The quality of low skilled workers isn't what it used to be.

OK - that is crazy.

Imagine how annoying it would be if you were in Montana or someplace where the nearest Infiniti dealer was 500+ miles away.

Went in last week w nail in tire. Fixed in 30 minutes and zero problems.

Leaking valve core that was reseated when you refilled the tire? I've run into that too many times on tires and AC schrader valves.

You'd be better off buying one of the $60 scan tools on Amazon to clear the code yourself.

That seems possible. Not overly worried about it. The tires are at 4 l, so planning to replace them soon anyway.

Might get that tool. Looks useful. Know I had a flat once in it years ago. Don't remember taking it in to the dealer. So maybe it will go away. Not bothering me that much, but it is pretty stupid.

The nail got fixed without issue. More irritating that they filled the tires so poorly. Not the end of the world. I'll fix it. Just shouldn't have to.

I'd go to a different location.

I still think Discount is one of the best service providers out there...but that's not to say they dont have a bad apple or two.

Did you manually check the tire pressures to compare against the TPMS readings? Not saying that it's wrong or they didn't mess up, but 1) if I were told that they checked the pressures and 2) the TPMS was that wacked out, that would at least be my first move.

I watched the work. The guy didn't even really try. Was using the manual air hose in the bay. The not trying part is what irrigates me.

Guess it was my bad not to ask for wipers since they didn't even try to sell them since I wasn't being charged anything.

I have used Discount Tire stores in many different cities. They have all been pretty consistent but some have definitely been better than others. They are just really hard to beat especially with the services they provide and the number of stores they have all across the US. For someone like me that travels a lot, they have saved my bacon more than once.

Sorry you had bad experience with one. Sounds like the employee did not know the proper way to do it or just did not care. Everyone has a bad apple every now and then.

If it really bothers you, don't use them anymore. Chances are your experience this one time is probably an isolated incident. I think in the long run, you will not find a better tire shop that can take care of you almost anywhere in the US.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

I agree honestly. There are not any better options and I have generally been happy with them.

Tried the next closest one to my house and it was much better.

Guessing the current manager at the old one is struggling with turnover or training. Maybe he is new.

I have been pretty lucky. The one close to me has been excellent over the past 20 years.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

My only complaint is that they usually don't protect wheels properly when placing new tires.

Well, ended up sort of figuring this part out. Either you drive for 600 to 700 miles or you let the low fuel warning come on or both.

Warning ended up going away on its own.

I'm in College Station and the temp just dropped to a rainy 55 degrees.

So when I went out for lunch just now, my low tire pressure light is on. It's probably about 50 degrees cooler than when I got the tires at Discount Tire back in June.

I know pressure changes with weather changes and as you drive. My original complaint had nothing to do with the exact numbers. It was the differences between tires and the difference between when I arrived and when I left. I also know that the TPS matches pretty closely to the gauge I use at home.

They're usually pretty good. My wife's newer car had a nail too close to the sidewall so they needed to replace the tire. Still has the stock tires on it with plenty of tread. I said just to put something on it similar to the ones it has. The guy says, "Those are bottom of the barrel tires. Is that what you want, just a bottom of the barrel tire? Let me see what we have." Looks up the tires they have and says, "ok we don't have those tires but we have other bottom of the barrel tires." I said I just want tires like the ones that are on it. "Ok, yeah we can put a bottom of the barrel tire on it."

He must have said bottom of the barrel 5+ times. Buddy, I just want close to what the stock tires are. Tire shaming me isn't going to make me buy a premium tire from you. It'll make me go somewhere else to get them from now on.

But he may have been right, many OEM tires are total garbage. You get what you pay for with tires.

I don't care if he's right or not. If I rubbed it in my customers faces that they aren't buying premium products/services they'd probably think I'm a dick too.

Tell them that's the economy or whatever tire, let them make the decision and be done with it. Don't repeat it an annoyingly amount of times in an attempt to make a sale.

To the OP's point about them being more interested in upselling than taking care of the customer, I'm so sick of that attitude across all sorts of industries.

How about showing some gratitude towards the customer for choosing to buy from you/your company? Give exceptional service to everyone and they'll get your name out there and you'll get the big orders too.

I'm sure these guys don't feel any sort of loyalty towards discount tire, but show a little pride in your work just as an individual. Tired of everyone being so "what's in it for me" or "that's not my job"

The Discount Tire by my (TC Jester & 18th in Houston) annoys me with being overly pushy for new tires when I come in for repairs/balance so I bought my own tire tread gauge to show them after they swipe their device over the tread, and then say that the tread is borderline untouchable. Their cutoff is "4/32" and my tread will be not anywhere close to the wear indicator.

I got new tires from them recently when they beat Costco's price and threw in free certificates but they weren't balanced correctly. Got them re-balanced Saturday and discovered last night that one wheel locked wasn't tightened and only stayed in because the centercap held in in place.

To pile on, ever since Covid I have to check in under an EZ up tent rather than inside so I'm sweating my @ss off waiting to check in even though I have an appointment. Then we have to walk over so they can check the mileage & tread. To end it all the overly talkative guy wants to shake hands, chat, and request a five start rating on my review as it's helps them succeed.

They price match easily and will beat the prices. My last trip I argued and was ready to walk if they didn't throw in the certs for free even though CostCo now pro-rates the replacement and that's by default w/ DT. DT does require you to buy a new cert if they do a replacement so it's not fully covered; I don't mind waiting around at CostCo eating hot dogs & pizza.
