We are trying to navigate the ridiculously confusing process to get my daughter her learners permit. That website sucks major ass.

We are confused on whether or not we need to provide proof of vehicle registration. Unfortunately, my wife is having to drive our daughter two hours to the DMV office tomorrow because we couldn't get an appointment anywhere closer.

Does anyone know what qualifies as proof of registration or how to get it? I have all of our vehicles are linked to my TXT account but it doesn't give an option to print any sort of registration receipt or proof.

Not sure what officially qualifies, but when you renew on the app you get an email receipt

Brought the paper the sticker is mailed on when we did it. I know at least that works.

Is the car registered in your daughter's name? If not, no need for proof of registration. I just went through this with my sons… we didn't need it because they don't own the vehicles they drive, we do.

OK, thank you so much. That made sense to me, but we were not 100% sure based on what we were seeing online. And I hated for them to drive two hours only to find out they didn't have what they need.

This is correct. Only need to show proof of registration for any vehicle(s) owned by the person getting their permit. If they will be learning in a vehicle registered to you, it's not needed.

The list of paperwork is ridiculous and confusing. Each site you look at has a slightly different list of items. Most of it is quickly obtained at any time. The one you need to get in advance is the VOE form and be aware that it expires a certain number of days after it is signed. Also note you'll need a new VOE form when they go to get their actual license.

Also, if you're doing parent taught driver's ed, the parent that is the registered teacher must be present when applying for the learner's permit.

Oh crud I'll have to check with my wife on the VOE. Thank you!

Ha yes agreed.

She does have the VOE form so hopefully they don't get turned away. I've talked to a few friends lately. Who have had multiple teenagers go through the process. They've all said that they've seen multiple people turned away because they didn't have everything they needed every time they've been. I consider my wife and I both be fairly intelligent people and it is ridiculously confusing.

My wife and I felt the same way that if we are struggling with this I feel for someone not used to dealing with daily paperwork, legal forms and similar. I walked in armed with every form of ID, certificates and forms I could gather stuffed into a folder as I wanted to make this a single trip operation.

With my oldest kid, I gave him the responsibility to gather all the documentation. While waiting in the lobby for his appointment he reveals that he forgot to get the VOE, so he brought his Student ID and Report Card as verification that he was in school. I understood his thought process but, needless to say, that didn't work and we were turned away. The appointment was also on a school holiday, so we couldn't just get the VOE and go back, so he had to wait a couple more weeks.

I was trying to give him some responsibility but instead taught myself that I needed to gather all the documents, which is what I did for my next 2 kids. I'm still not exactly sure what is needed because when I went a few months ago I had everything listed on the DPS website and they looked at less than half of it.

These checklists were helpful when trying to figure out what we needed this spring:
