Will be watching this with interest. Could be a great move for Nissan.

Nothing much, honestly. Marginally higher market share I suppose.

They get the engineering behind the sweet Nissan CVTs.

Nissan makes some sports cars and trucks that Honda doesn't, and some of the non-US Nissan trucks and SUV are very popular in Asia and Australia. There are market segments and technologies to be gained and shared.

Nissan makes the Patrol too, which is arriving now in QX80 form.

That is a great looking vehicle.

It's also being released as the Armada in the US. And the new Armada will be much more similar to the Patrol than the 2nd gen was.

Sweet. drumgirl wants the new QX80 but I'd prefer a new GX or (another) used LX570.

The new QX80 does look legit.

Got rid of the tried and true V-8, now a turbo V-6 with same fuel efficiency and slower.

I don't see what Honda could really gain by acquiring Nissan unless they get it for a steal. Growth at the expense of quality does not align with Honda's values. Will be interesting to watch it play out.

Wrong on both counts. As much as I lament the demise of the 5.6L, the TTV6 Armada has improved fuel economy and is significantly quicker than the outgoing V8 models. Long-term reliability is where the new engine will likely fall short.

Lexus LS ??

But the real question for me isn't the fuel economy or power.

Which engine will last me 300,000 - 500,000 miles?

Well Hondas tend to be boring as hell. Their interiors are especially bland. In a perfect world, Nissan might improve their reliability and Honda might learn how to make a more interesting looking vehicle. Also, Honda has never been much at making offroad vehicles. Nissan has had some success at that.

With Nissan killing their truck, y'all can now get Nissan Ridgelines though.

It also looks like Honda is bringing back the Prelude to try and liven up their lineup. It's a hybrid.

We bought a Nissan Kicks, after not being able to find a Juke on her (very impatient) timeline.

Unfortunately, I wasn't watching Scotty Kilmer videos yet about these trash CVTs at the time of purchase.

We were just told we needed a new transmission because of a faulty solenoid. We can't find anyone willing to just replace the solenoid because of the complex design of the transaxle and legal liability.

This is a 2018 RX 350 with 65k miles.

I'm starting to think all Asian car mfg reliability is bull*****

That's really disappointing. I would be calling 10 different transmission shops before accepting that fate on a Lexus. Where are you?

Why do you think Japanese vehicle reliability is waning?

They have more quality control processes in place than ever. I think we need to ask what manufacturers reliability has actually improved.

How much of the CAFE requirements are causing an increased complexity of the drivetrains and emissions making it difficult to prevent parts and system failures of these vehicles?

There have been many rock solid tank of japanese vehicles in last 20 years. Those I could actually work on.

I'm guessing that much of the quality issues are related to the pursuit of higher mileage due to government regulations. When a reliability mainstay like Toyota has the problem they just had with the Tundra engine, it's easy to believe in an overall decline. I'm no mechanic but here are the main trends I see over the last 10 years across multiple brands:

1-problems with any transmission more complex than a five speed automatic
2-problems keeping the fluid systems separated in high-pressure engines. Fuel/oil/coolant.
3-problems with complexity or durability of engine management computers
4-the mysterious difficulty in getting white paint to stick for a long time
5-problems with the mechanical side of more complex engines, such as cam phasers, lifters, cylinder shut-off systems.

This may be an anecdote but Toyota and Lexus are fanatical about the customer feedback on their cars. And eventually they fix the problems, as much as they can.

With the release of these new engines; turbo, hybrid etc, we should expect issues, of course no fatal defects.

But if I have an expectation that one manufacturer will get it right, I have more faith in Toyota than any other brands.

I don't know...Prius was a massive gamble experiment by Toyota and I have to think they finally got it right, with the last improvement being the design.

North Dallas. I got recs for four and none of them would touch it sans full replacement. Cheapest quote I got was $7,500. Dealer was $12k.

Edit: NADA was $25k. We were going to need a slightly larger car in the next year or two due to family size so we traded it in while the issue was still intermittent. It's hard for me to not generalize and write off Toyota as we bought it used expecting to get 7-10 years out of it.

Dude that sucks. Even as a Toyota fan boy, it'd be enough for me to swear off Toyota.... Except, with the prices being quoted, I'd just go in, drop the transmission pan.. And replace the solenoid myself.

Looks like it's a $300 part. But I don't know if theres one or 10 solenoids.

Disclaimer, I don't know enough about this.. So I'm talking out of my ass. But I know someone here on the autoboard would tell me to STFU then probably proceed to help you DIY.

Yeah… this sort of fix is way out of my comfort zone. I'm somewhat capable when it comes to vehicle maintenance but I would have wanted to pay someone who does this sort of thing more regularly.

That could have been a person from TexAgs but it's too late for that now.
