Question about car insurance rates for old people

We all know about unmarried males under 25 and how their car insurance is super high.

I was talking to my 82 y/o father-in-law and he said that insurance for 2 vehicles in Harris County is now about $2,000 every 6 months. They don't drive anything super special, I think they've got a Camry and a Highlander.

If he's paying $4k/yr for him and his new wife to drive (I think she's about 77), I'm thinking they probably should switch to Uber.

With my parents, my 88 y/o father stopped driving at least 6 years ago but my 77 y/o mother is still driving. Her mother drove until she was close to 90.

My question is, what are the parameters around when your car insurance rates start going up as you age?

My mom told me her agent said it gets crazy when they hit 80. She just turned 78. I don't want to think about her not driving and relying on me. Good gravy

Thanks for the reply. This is something I wasn't aware of and frankly, never really cared about because I'm nowhere near that old but lately, I'm having to get involved.

I can probably manage my parents. Either I'm going to have to move to Waco (which isn't going to happen), or they're going to have to move to Galveston and live in my guest house (which is possible).

My major concern at the moment is that my father-in-law is going to get fleeced by the auto insurance companies. He already sold out of his house in Clear Lake once the annual flood insurance reached $10,000/yr for a house he had been in for 50 years (think old NASA moon landing type neighborhood) and had never flooded.

Maybe those old people that live in retirement communities and drive golf carts have the right idea.

Those Nassau bay houses supposedly are in jeopardy of tidal flooding aka storm surge

My buddy over there paid off his house and doesn't carry flood insurance

Yeah, they successfully scared my FiL out of his house at 14 ft elevation.

I've seen a lot of the Nassau Bay houses where they've jacked them up and added a new ground floor.

My parents are in their mid 80s and still drive. We've talked about insurance over dinner, but I don't recall specifics.

My wife's grandmother is in her late 80s and still very active but she's not the best driver and has bumped in to a few things over the past couple of years requiring repairs. She told my wife recently her car insurance is almost $8k a year. She does drive a Porsche suv so that may contribute some as well.

My mother is in her mid 80s and totaled at least 5 vehicles in her life. Two in the past decade. Can't imagine her insurance.
