Would you consider buying a (repaired) vehicle totaled for hail damage?

I found a low mileage 2023 Expy selling at a discount. Carfax shows that it was totaled out due to hail damage, no mechanical issues noted. I found the auction pictures- the hood and windshield were completely trashed by what looks to be baseball size hail. I am guessing the A pillars and roof metal was similar (no photos of pano sunroof). The post-repair photos look fine, as far as photos go.

  • Would you even consider buying, and if so, at how much of a % discount off market would it take?
  • I believe vehicles totaled in Texas due only to hail damage don't get a salvage title. Would it being totaled still impact Ford's warranty? I wonder if I can figure this out through Oasis. Insurability?
  • On a PPI, what would you be looking for/focused on? I admittedly do not know how to judge a crummy filler + paint job vs. PDR. I do plan to ask for the repair records.

Under these conditions:
1) very discounted
2) extended bumper to bumper warranty
3) you plan on driving it forever as may be hard to sell

I purchased a new Suburban with hail damage many years ago. Damage was only on the roof which was not visible.

A restored vehicle with a rebuilt title is usually 30-40% off a like vehicle. Although recently that ratio has reduced with how expensive cars are and the market for cheaper cars has risen.

I've never bought a rebuilt title that wasn't restored so not sure what to pay for one that needs to be done. Bought a flooded rebuilt title corvette back in 2022 and had a blast with it for over a year. Sold it in two days for what I paid for it.

The best thing about a rebuilt title is that it doesn't depreciate much anymore.

It appears to have a clean title even though it was totaled. 17k miles. Looks like it sold at auction for $29k, list for sale for $50k, which is high in my book even if 100% good as new. The seller is now saying that they didn't keep any records of the repair work (even though it was performed in the last 90 days). Admits that there is both PDR and filler work. My interest is diminished.

I would if it was a much older car and it's been a few years since the work was done. Pass on paying $30k on a car with baggage.

Clean title except for the rebuild? It's like saying she's a hooker but doesn't have any STDs.

Irrelevant article from a vehicle valuation standpoint. I buy tens of thousands of cars a year for dealers and not one would take your car as retailable unit.

Drive train should be great, but it's a work truck now. You beat it up that bad and replace major amounts of body and it's never going to be quite right from little things and fitment and possible future body gasket leaks and corrosion points. It should be priced accordingly, and still has value as a vehicle with a low mileage drive train and newer interior, in my view.

I would, replace the hood and windshield. Learn paintless dent repair and try to fix some of the dents. if I can't, then oh well. I would prefer it to be white, personalized license plate GOLF BUV.

I bought a 2010 F250 Lariat diesel in 2014 that had significant hail damage. It had about 72,000 miles on it. All the glass had been replaced but probably has 300 hail dings in it. I paid $17,000 for it. Book value at that time without the damage was around $36,000. So I would guess a 50% cut for hail damage. Luckily the title was not affected. My wife calls the truck Bam Bam.

Today it has almost 250,000 on it and still going strong.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

Not sure how folks keep missing the car was already repaired and OP is considering buying it.

OP - doesn't seem like the price discount is enough to move forward. Every person who considers buying this car in the future will likely google the vin and find the same pictures you posted. I'd want a 50-60% off market price reduction after I saw those.

Pretty sage advice. You purchase at a steep discount.
