Like the title says, I'm coming from an 08 Ford to a '17 Ram 1500 with the 5.7 - what are some common squawks? It has 30k miles and has been driven 5x in the past year. I'm getting some new tires, and ranch hand on the front/steel on the back.

Getting the oil changed just to have a baseline.

Anything else I should be doing/looking at?

Old truck has 300k on a 5.4.

I liked my 5.7 a lot. It was a good and simple truck with plenty of power and nice V8 tone. I put some good miles and a lot years on mine.

You will get an exhaust leak on the manifolds at some point. Just a matter of when. Makes a ticking sound during start-up that usually goes away when it warms up. It can sound similar to the lifter tick, which is less common, but probably the biggest common issue with that engine. You want to be aware of both.

Thanks for that - glad to hear it's still simple.

You aren't joking about the power for days. I averaged 85 and got 21 mpg, compared to 12.5 on 65 in my old rig.

I would change the oil frequently to avoid a potential stuck lifter later on.

By reputation, the 5.7 drivetrain is usually reliable and relatively trouble free. Other little things might break around it, but it should be a sound vehicle if little things don't bother you as it ages.

The TIPM fails occasionally which can impact starting the truck. Remote will work longer than just turning the key. There's a quick fix for it. Did it in mine in 2020 and haven't had an issue so far.

Might be a bit different here as I have an 08 Ram / 5.7 Hemi. At 223K miles, she started missing badly. I changed plugs (16 on a Hemi) coil packs and replaced valve cover gaskets. I also had to replace the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors (easy to do). Running like a top once again.

As mentioned earlier, the manifold tick (leak) is common. Goes away after a couple minutes.

I have 280k on a 2004 5.4 F150 under a barn, still runs, but I drive the 2018 F150. Those old Fords can probably run another decade or two with few problems.
