Situation been discussed here plenty over the years I am sure, but I am not on this board much. Apologies if there is a existing thread for this.

We have three kids with another on the way this summer. Oldest is only 6 years old. Wife currently drives a Kia Telluride. She likes the Telluride, but its just too small to add a fourth kid and live our active lifestyle. Strollers, cars seats and all the other crapola that goes with it.

In my opinion we have two options:

  • Suburban/Yukon XL. I am comfortable with this option, Grew up in these cars, my mom still very unnecessarily drives one to this day. Main problem is my wife says they are too big and doesn't want to drive one around town.

  • Minivan. I used to be the classic Minivan hater, but upon becoming a dad I see their value. Especially in the situation I am in now with young kids and all the gear. These cars were literally created to help families like mine get around. Great features and gotta love the price point compared to a Yukon XL. Main problem is my wife thinks driving a mini van will be the last straw in whatever is left of her pre-mother pride ( I already told her that is long gone so might as well Claytie Williams it at this point). We can always upgrade to a Yukon once the kids move past the carseat stage.

My wife is trying to say we can stay in the Telluride with four, but she will eventually give up this charade and we will get one of the above options. I just wanted to see if the Auto board recommends something else. Its a shame that the new Sequoias are so small or that woudlve been an option.

If you aren't pulling anything, get a minivan. Especially since it will be at 2/3 the price

The answer lies in an extended test drive of both.

100% minivan. The sliding doors are life changing with small kids.

Get the minivan. They are practically as heck. The kids will be able to open the sliding doors and climb in themselves without denting the cars parked next to you. We easily fit a double bob stroller behind the third row and it's easy to get in and out.

No dilemma at all. You are parents 3 of soon to be 4, that's awesome! It's a sacrifice, but it's just that time in your life. A minivan does not equal you or your wife's personality.

Agreed, if the OP is of the age to know what this means, I would expect him to be an empty nester by now! Go with the MV is my vote BTW

Just getting small kids in and out of car seats in a parking spot is enough to recommend a minivan. Plus more useable space, more efficient, etc

We have 3 kids and the wife has a CX-9. She's already said she's fine with her next ride being a minivan. Thinking a KIA carnival will be in the mix along with possibly a Honda or Toyota. We haven't gone to look at them yet but the thought of buying a Tahoe or Yukon at the prices they are at make no sense to us. My wife knows she will get a cooler SUV or car once the kids are older.

We drive expedition max. Four kids. A minivan is super practical but neither of us wants to drive one as a daily.

Just picked up our 4th kid and a 2003 Excursion. Wife has a minivan but I hate it with a passion. We take the excursion everywhere. Can't recommend it enough.

Excursion is the best multi purpose vehicle, hands down.

Rent a minivan and drive it a week. They are amazingly agile, comfortable, and maneuverable

Another vote for mini van. Honda or Toyota. Your choice.

We had two kids and a third on the way. Similar to you, we were set to have 3 under 6.

Wife wanted a minivan, I thought not a chance would we get a minivan.

She convinced me one day to take three car seats to a dealership and get all that garbage in and out of various vehicles.

I had the salesman pull a handful of 3 row SUV. I went through putting seats in. I immediately realized anything in that third row was a lost cause. Just a giant pain.

He then pulled a minivan up. They slide those doors open and did some magic trick to give me easy access to the third row.

I was sold in 2 minutes. It's not even close.

Couple years later we had twins. We have bad that Van 10 years now. It's gone all over with all sort of kids in it and i have regretted my decision for 0 seconds. I would hate to actually peak in that third row now as 5 kids have lived back there. No telling what you might find. It's been awesome.

One day you will be out of the minivan stage and you can move on.
As you described it sounds like you are right in the middle of the minivan era. Embrace it and buy it. They can't be beat for convenience and family.

Wife was vehement in her dislike of minivans. After I convinced her this what's the smartest option, we bought a brand new 2019 Odyssey Elite. Now, I can't get her out of the minivan mindset. I've suggested other cars like the GX550 and she retorts back with a minivan option. Go figure.

Get a Kia Carnival. It has all the benefits of a minivan but is a "multi purpose vehicle". Better AC than the Honda without the VVT issues, and a 3.5 NA V6 which is unavailable in the Toyota. Drives much less like a minivan than the Chrysler.

Man I really was disappointed with the refresh on the 2024.
The outgoing model was very handsome for a minivan.

The hybrid is cool but also happy they kept the V6.

Just go for the Ford Transit van. Leave lots of room in the trophy case for future hardware.

We have the older model and love everything about it except the "hurse" look on the c pillar, and the rear indicators being down low on the bumper. They fixed the indicator issue on the refresh. Don't love the redesigned cockpit.

Wish they offered the transit trail in a passenger version.

Mrs 1ags is a hard no on the transit van. Kids love the idea of that or Sprinter.

How's reliability been? Seems the V6 engines on Hyundai/Kias are fairly solid. My mom's Genesis just rolled 115K without a single hitch.

Only downside (and reason I don't own one) is minivans are very wide and dont/didnt have 360 cams. An Odyssey would barely squeak in our garage with mirrors manually folded and a spotter vs a new sequoia, old sequoia, gx, lx, and our eventual selection LC.

According to Edmunds, a 2025 Oddy is 1.3" more narrow (without mirrors), 2.9" shorter (in length) and 7.1" shorter in height than a 2025 Sequoia

I'm a month into a '25 carnival sx prestige. I freakin' love this thing. No regrets whatsoever and that's only with 2 young kids. 4 is an absolute no brainer. It's the only "van" I would consider precisely because it doesn't look like one. If it weren't for the kids I'd be in a diesel Tahoe/yukon. Im a truck gal through and through and my only complaint is it's so low but that was a known trade off. Really love this thing! Springfield Kia in Missouri was phenomenal to work with. I couldn't find a dealer closer to home willing to negotiate or with one that didn't have the rear entertainment (reviews on RES are terrible, absolutely not worth the price plus we don't do screentime).

No power fold mirrors or 360 cam made it not an option. And thinking back, we didn't bring the 3rd gen Sequoia home, only the 2nd gen.

Let me see if I can find any pictures from when we were shopping...

Did find some but forgot that I cancelled my subscription so posting is annoying. I also recall now that the issue was driving the Odyssey in with the mirrors extended since all the other options had power fold.

Yukon XL/Suburban/Expedition Max has a usable-for-adults third row plus good cargo area behind it.

I bit the bullet on a 2024 Suburban because the 4 runner was too small and piling crap into the back of a pickup over and over again was tiresome.

I think your wife would be impressed with the Yukon XL. It is easier to drive than it looks.

The problem with suv 3rd row is accessing that 3rd row with multiple car seats (especially rear facing), and actually strapping the rear facing surfboard toddler in. You cannot lean the middle row seat back forward if a carseat is installed, and a split bench second row makes it even more impractical. Put rearfacing in the 3rd row and you're talking mega PITA to strap them in because there's no space for car seats plus adult. On top of that, a seat is not really safe if a headrest is not present. It's actually something that drives me nuts, the ability to claim a vehicle carries x passengers when there are only x-2 usable headrests. The carnival has none of these issues, and all three seats in the second row move independently of each other and can be removed from the vehicle altogether also independent of each other to make customization and 3rd row access an absolute breeze. I have mine setup so that I get into the back with the kids and door closed so that I'm not wrangling one kid in a parking lot while trying to strap the other in, vehicle stays a good temp vs all the cool/warm air pouring out when I do pickup, and we are less vulnerable since there is absolutely no way I can be aware of surroundings while leaned into a vehicle and dealing with kids. Like I said, the only negative so far is being so low to the ground when all I've ever daily driven are 1/2 ton trucks and a Tahoe. But I continue to be amazed with how the carnival can be configured to breeze through every scenario we come across.

My daughter had been begging to sit next to little bro but no way was I doing that. Then we got the carnival and if they are driving me nuts I just slide her seat back so they are no longer next to each other. It's my fave feature. The timeout slider.

Yes, they've moved much more kid friendly and hopefully others follow suit. That would be a tremendous improvement across the market. I looked into suvs that tilted. That tilt feature will not work so well with a non-360 rotating rear facing car seat. And she mentioned what I was talking about previously, non adjustable headrests which limits who can sit there with or without a car seat. No limitations (those seats won't be safe for anyone whose ears are above the headrest, or a forward facing car seat where the headrest interferes) and at least a 15k price difference made the choice easy for me. For comparable features and tech, probably more like a 25k+ price difference. Bonus, my oldest is significantly more independent in the carnival than she was in my truck or would have been in an suv. She can open doors, lift her things in, safely climb in etc.

A lot of words to say the man's wife should at least consider the carnival. Again, the only "van" I considered due to its styling and after seeing it there was a really high bar for other vehicles to beat. I went with astra blue, black interior (no burnt orange Tuscan umber interior here). Prestige trim includes dark edition. It's a super nice combo.

When we had #3, we bought a Honda Odyssey and it's been awesome with 3 little kids. It's low enough to the ground that they could/can climb in without needing us to lift them up, and the doors they use slide open so no worries about them slamming a door into a car parked next to you in a parking lot or your garage. Speaking of...it fits fine in any garage if you're one that actually uses it for it's intended purpose.

6 adults could comfortably ride from Houston to Dallas because the 2nd and 3rd row seats are roomy and lots of headroom. We keep the 2nd row middle seat out and in the garage most of the time, but it's easily put in and removed when we need it. Oh, and the 2nd row captains chairs are simple to remove for when you're doing your semi-annual deep clean of it to get all of the crackers, french fries, and toys that find their way under the seats. 3rd row is not removable, but no big issue to clean. Our 3rd row has 2 different fold options. One that allows for it to be folded down but still have full access to the rear, or a 2nd option that folds into the rear for a fully flat surface.

We road trip each July to the family farm in Iowa, have road tripped to Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida in it for vacations and softball tournaments, and there is zero obstructions of the rear window with all of our luggage, beach gear, softball gear, and cooler. I chuckle when I see Tahoes/Suburbans/Expeditions/etc on these same road trips loaded to the brim and having a luggage box on the top of the vehicle or a luggage rack on the tow hitch.

All of that and 30mpg on a road trip.

You can get a fully loaded Odyssey or Sienna for ~$50k. You're not touching a similarly equipped Suburban or Expedition for that. My pride gets me in a lot of trouble, but $15-20k+ will make me swallow it quite quickly. Honestly, the hardest part of buying a minivan is overcoming the stigma of a minivan. If you're fine with wearing clothes from Target and not giving a f*** about what others think, a minivan would be wonderful. If you need to wear name brand anything so you can impress others, may I suggest the a Suburban/Yukon XL. Outside of needing to tow something while hauling the whole family, most anti-minivan people can't give you a good reason outside of being too insecure to drive one.

As far as your wife's pride...after 4 kids, she probably pees a bit if she laughs too hard or sneezes. Pride left her after that first push.
