Realize this may not be the typical auto board post, but lots of posters here with way more knowledge in this kind of stuff than I have so trying to get lucky here

About a month ago, all of a sudden, our golf cart started having a brake issue where whenever the brake is lightly pressed while driving, the cart comes to an extremely sudden stop.

Any ideas on whats causing this and what the fix is?

I've only had three carts and each one just had a turnbuckle adjustment, and I never had to loosen them, always tighten. I suspect in your case perhaps the parking brake isn't fully releasing? Does it come to a stop faster than before when you let off the gas?

If there is an easy way to tell, I am all ears.
From what I can tell online, I would guess mechanical.

It doesnt really. The only noticeable (albeit very noticeable) is when I use the brake. Even just a light foot on it, it comes to an abrupt stop.

What brand and year of cart? If this is a normal golf cart, it almost certainly has electric brakes. I don't know why it is locking up, but with anything electrical, trace the wires and look for a short.

Electric brakes. Maybe a short. Maybe the brake control. Maybe something else.
