Looking for a V10 or 7.3 Excursion. Best place to look?

Auto Trader, Craigslist, FB Marketplace, or Ebay

Those are going to be your best bets. Alternatively you could have CABT build you a brand new one if you've got the $$$

BaT has pretty good examples pop up every 1-2 weeks or so.

I really like the idea of swapping the front end on them, but still would want some of the interior creature comforts from a newer vehicle

I picked mine up on Facebook marketplace. I wanted a 6.0 and was okay without 4X4 which helped broaden my search. Bought it 11/3 and have already put almost 4,000 miles on it.

People think the 7.3 is made out of gold… 6.0 is good bang for the buck if it hasn't been flogged.

I love this truck. Currently in IL for a funeral. Swapped in 5w-40 oil before the trip and had a clean start at 13F with no block heater. Used the block heater this morning for a clean start at 3F.

I'm surprised they never brought the Excursion back.

Ford ought to revive the Excursion, but call it the Canyonero. I'd be shopping that pretty hard. Can you imagine one today with a King Ranch interior? Just looking at an Excursion makes me smile a little.

I think Dodge has the trademarks locked down.

I'm not an SUV guy, but I'd drive an Excursion instead of my truck.

I recently was close to pulling the trigger on a 2005 6.0. for our growing family, and test drove a couple. I ultimately decided not to go the Excursion route due to safety concerns. They have no third row headrests and have relatively poor survivability statistics in a rollover, as the pillars/roof are not strong enough to support the weight of the vehicle.

Per federal fatality data, adjusted for registered vehicle years, the Excursion had more than triple the fatality rate of the Expedition.

If it was just me, I wouldn't care. I wish Ford would bring the Excursion back. But until then, I think I will have to settle for something with a more modern safety design, side airbags, etc.

My Excursion used to be the largest SUV on the road. Now days I feel dwarfed by some of the F150/250s, Suburbans, etc.

After seeing the info on rollovers, could one affordably add a roll cage or other structural support?

You could always go with a 3/4 ton suburban instead. I believe the roof pillars were reinforced after the 2002 model year.

Number of times I've been in a 7,000 lb vehicle that rolled over?

Certainly it could be better but... if you're just using it to go camping and pick up the kids from school, or tailgate, etc., I think you'll most likely be OK. Now if you're one of these turkeys who drives off the Galveston Seawall, you're probably screwed.

Been there, done that. Was just going on a ski trip. I guarantee you can be in a rollover even when you're not planning on being in one. And I couldn't live with myself if it was my kids killed because I knowingly chose a family vehicle that was below average in crash safety.

Damn.

Glad you survived. I assume others did not.

Edit: I found the NTSB report. Dec 21, 1999, 3 fatalities. Speeding bus on ice. I vaguely remember that. It was a hectic time in my life.

Reminds me, Corps member JJ Sanchez '93 was killed in a rollover accident coming back from the Grand Canyon during Spring Break. I don't recall the precise details but the other guys all lived.

A HS friend was killed in a rollover but in his case he was ejected from the vehicle and the car landed on top of him. Always wear your seatbelt. Especially when you drink and drive.
