Get a snow rated all terrain tire for year round.

Or buy snow specific tires and change them out

All weather (not all season) is the answer from what I've read, although I've never owned a set.

Vredestin has some really good all weather tires.

SUV can notionally mean a lot of different vehicles these days. Check out this thread for AT tire recommendations with some reference articles which include snow worthiness.

If you consider a Nissan Kicks or Hyundai Kona an SUV then disregard everything.

What are you driving? Mainly interested if it's AWD, FWD, or RWD. If anything other than AWD I would get snow tires, if it is AWD just find a highway or all terrain that is has been rated well on snow.

Lived in Denver a while now and Defender LTX MS are great. You don't really need snow tires in Denver area and suburbs 99% of the time. The other 1% just stay home. The MS's will get you up I70 to the resorts just fine in all but the extreme worst conditions. If it's super bad blizzard type situation and you just have to go skiing a set of chains are better and easier than swapping wheels or tires.

With FWD if you're a confident & competent driver with the flexibility to not have to commute to work on snowy days I agree with just getting some m/s all seasons. If you aren't confident in your abilities or you aren't going to be the only one driving your vehicle and you have less confidence in their abilities, or you'll be doing a decent amount of driving regardless of conditions then I'd get snow tires. Blizzaks are very popular here and seem to be well liked.

Are you going back and forth part time? Where is the other part time location? Back and forth in winter?

4 years ago, I slapped on Michelin CrossClimate 2 on my daughter's Prius for her move to Ithaca NY where winters are brutal. Those tires are snow rated yet smooth in summers too.

I now have the Prius with same tires and it does OK on snow here in Virginia.

This, the CrossClimate tires from Michelin are fantastic.

Thanks for the advice. We will be 4-6 months in Texas and same in Denver.

Have lived in CO for over a decade. I was recommended Cooper AT3s when I moved here and haven't gotten anything else since. Work great on snow or other terrain year round. Plus, made in the U.S.

Vredestin makes great four season tires. Also Michelin defender 2 is a great choice.
