I contacted an out of state dealer who had what I thought was a good deal on a 2024 Expedition Timberline:

I request an OTD price. Sales guy sends me a signed proposal:

I ask him a follow up question to confirm the mileage. He then responds an hour later that the vehicle has sold. I was frustrated but figured there was nothing I could do. Then tonight I see the same vehicle is still listed for sale, but they jacked up the price:

Can a dealer do this? Glad I hadn't made travel plans to visit the dealer.

Yes they can do that. It's their vehicle until you purchase it. Just be glad you were saved and out of state trip to have them pull this once you arrived.

I find it odd that they told you it was sold when it wasn't. Not that they raised the price and relisted it.

Report them to the BBB for deceptive practices.

Owner's wife wanted to drive it a little longer.

Common bait and switch is to do that ****, then "just sold that vehicle, but we have a nicer one that's just like it".

Yep. Had an identical one they offered to sell for $3600 more. Same options.

Lots of deals fall through at the 11th hour. When I purchased my truck, with an appointment scheduled, another dude was out test driving it. They made it to the F&I guy while I waited in the lobby, and it did indeed fall through. Luckily I was there to take the vehicle, but with demand like that I have no doubt they'd have raised the price had I not been there at the dealership.

Wish they had timelines for cars like they do with houses - been on the market XXX days, etc to see how long it's been sitting

You can find that information on car edge website. Navigate to cars for sale in your area and that is something they show for free.

Cavender in Columbus did this to me on a used truck. That dealer is over 2 hours away from me. The truck was sold 15 minutes before I arrived. To a guy out of state. Sight unseen. Fortunately I was already going to Houston so it didn't really do anything other than validate my feelings that Tommie Vaughan is the only dealer I'll ever work with. If you are buying a Ford, reach out to 1ags. This is the only way to buy one. They've treated me right for 25 years and I drive 3 hours to deal with them. That's how much I like them.

We had a car flooded in Harvey and I asked for comps they used to value the car and they sent me 5 that they found at local dealerships. I looked them up and a few were priced much high then when insurance pulled them, likely due to the crazy demand when 500K cars had to be replaced in Houston.

Worked out well in our favor.

Looks like they added a rebate twice and realized the mistake & told you it was sold instead of admitting it (shows still available in Fords system). Expeditions have great rebates but not $18K worth. Ours has $13K

Just for future reference, no one cares about the BBB anymore. Leaving a bad review on Yelp and Google will get you more traction. Make sure and list the sales guy and sales manager's name when you do it. They love that.
