What to do with truck at end of life?

My F150 with 189k miles is finally on its last leg. Missfire in a cylinder, cracked radiator, and leaking head gasket. It is time to replace it but I have no idea how to go about selling the truck with known issues. Is it simply a call to Copart /junkyard since it's unlikely any dealer would take it in or private buyer would want it.

Loved that truck and maintained it well but it was its time.

Need a tax write off? If so, look for a Kars4kids or something along the lines of that.

I think you'd be surprised what independent used car dealer lots will buy.

I just sold a car to a local used lot. The lot owner lamented that they're buying most of their cars sight unseen via online auctions. They rarely get to actually look at and drive a vehicle.

If your dashboard is lit up like Times Square and the interior is trashed, they may not give you much.

But if you can find and patch the radiator leak (sometimes the plastic just cracks and you can fix it with some UV dye and JB Weld) and it doesn't shoot a giant white could of white smoke out the tailpipe, the problems you describe may not be a real big deal to a used dealer. The misfire could also be something as simple as a bad spark plug or coil. Those might be like $50 total to replace.

I would shop it around to independent lots. Take it to 3 or 4 and see what they offer.

I would post it for sale even with known issues like that. Just list all of the issues you know of in the ad so people know what they are getting into. Somebody will want it if the price is right.

Where are you? If near Houston or Ft Worth, take it to Ritchie brothers auction with the title. They will send you a check after the next as-is auction. I think they have lots in other parts of the state also. We have taken several there over the years and have always been happy with the results. Once on their lot, no test driving but prospective buyers can start and look at the parking spot.

The truck could pass inspection as is. No lights going off.

I'll call around to some local Austin/north San Antonio places to see what they could do. I'm not expecting much.

And this is why you should be very wary about buying a car from the shady little tote the note dealerships!

What year is the truck?

I'd be tempted to replace plugs, coils, and radiator, and then trade it in with no warning lights or obvious leaks. Is the oil milky?

2015. Interior is good. Radiator leak is a must fix. Leaking head gasket probably needs to be replaced as well. From the outside it's in good shape.

My concern is they're could be more issues but have to spend more $$ to just figure that out.

I would fill that radiator with stopleak and post it on craigslist or fb, then enjoy the sweet smell of benjamins as you watch the proud new owner head south pulling a camry that's pulling a corolla

Copart just offered me $5k for it without any repair. If they pick it up and I don't have to repair anything, that frankly isn't a bad offer.

Seeing feelers selling similar for $12k, so doing the math on the repairs and their profit, $5k is a good ballpark.

Bird in hand, and you don't have to think about or mess with it anymore.

3 years ago, I could have probably gotten $5k for my truck (1 owner). It was 9 years older than yours and 100k more miles. So what did I do?

I put $5k worth of work into it.

The way I convinced myself of it, if I'd bought something newer - and just to make it easy assuming a $500/mo payment on some newer truck - I only needed to drive the old truck for 10 months to justify making the repairs. The mechanic at the shop I used was like, "Damn… this is like a brand new truck now!" when I picked it up.

I've now driven it for 38 months since the repairs. There's been a few other things since then to repair as well, but I'm still way out ahead on that deal, and not having a car payment during all 4 years of that dumpster fire last administration was a brilliant move in hindsight. (remember: a $500/mo truck payment really ain't realistic these days; most payments will be much higher).

I am going to sell it soon though, and I'm taking nothing less than $5k for it, because I'll get it. She's still in good shape too.
This time I think it's real. I'm just ready for more room and more modern comfortable seats… and a great sound system, without having to fiddle around with aftermarket stuff.

So who do I need to talk to in the Houston metro area for an F-150 or a Ram 1500????
