Weirdly, they can work pretty well when paired with smaller rims and larger sidewall and ratings that allow for significant deflation in offroad terrain. And on road they are more efficient though you give up some braking.

The contact footprint is not as wide but still wire long such that the overall area is still pretty large. It looks weird but it can work.
