My 2018 Wrangler, that my daughter drives, suddenly developed a slight oil leak. Got it into the shop yesterday. Service writer indicated that he had another 18 Wrangler that just came in for a similar issue. Turns out that there are three others at this same shop for the same thing. Oil cooler is leaking and failing.

Guessing this is a known common issue?

Yes, a common issue I learned about a few months ago on my daughter's 2018. It's a plastic/metal part. Ours coincidentally happened right after an oil change....

yes, oil cooler cracks. have to be super careful to not overtorque filter cap. i am super careful, and i'm pretty sure mine is cracked regardless. it's a terrible design.

Oil leaks on a Jeep come standard from the factory

1ags had some luck with some Eastern European version of this part as a replacement if memory serves me correctly.

there is an aftermarket aluminum housing by Dorman that is supposed to solve the issue.

Except it doesn't from what I've heard. Only a matter of time for that on to fail too.

Are y'all doing your own oil changes? The online manual I saw has the torque for the plastic filter cap at 18 lb-ft. I have been using that, but honestly it seems too tight to me. I may back it down to 10 lb-ft and check to see if the red filter o-ring is fully invisible. Trouble is the threads mate pretty tightly and I'm not sure the o-ring will be completely seated inside the canister.

I need to Google this failure and see if there are any pictures out there of the cracked housings that leaked. I wonder if there is any way to reinforce the area that cracks with some JB weld on the outside.

It sucks that this is a failure waiting to happen, because this canister filter is what makes oil changes so quick and easy compared to all my other vehicles.

Do you torque it to 18 lb-ft, or something less?

Y'all not read my post about unscrewing the oil filter housing? Should be 18 ft-lb to tighten.

I had to use my impact wrench on the highest setting to unscrew it last weekend. And it took a while before it loosened.

Couple years ago my '17 Wrangler Unlimited had an oil cooler leak. On a cold day ... smoke billowed from the hood and when I parked to check there was a small pool of oil on the ground

** warning... have no idea if the following is really true **

Service tech said something about Jeeps sold in Southern states have plastic oil coolers ... that they're very susceptible to harsh, cold weather (expansion/contraction ... O-ring gets brittle and fails).

He said the Jeeps sold in the Northern areas of the U.S. have oil coolers made of metal and are hardened / less prone to fail leak.

He mentioned this after the Jeep was repaired under warranty.

If I had known this I would have paid additional out of pocket for the metal, hardened oil cooler.

Prius and ES350, I have no experience.

Wife has a 3.6 Pentastar.

This sounds like a line of BS, but what do I know. If the different cooler were part of some sort of cold weather prep package, like with a block heater or a plow package maybe I could see it. But just a single part being changed on a vehicle based on dealership location sounds like a manufacturing line complication that no volume OEM would accommodate.

I wax expecting someone to say they had a 4Runner and their wife drives a Kicks.

For the longest time I have wondered what the hell is up with that guy, or bot, or whatever. Just socially awkward poster or what? I usually don't get the inside jokes. Shocks me there is not a thread about him being a reincarnation of MFBarnes or tikashooter.
