My dad has owned an ~'05 Lexus LX 470 for the past 15 years. It was officially pronounced dead by his mechanic (blew a head gasket) so now he is in the market for something else.

What would the Auto board recommend? Some details below.

  • This car will be his daily driver (lots of miles in the Houston metro).
  • He likes sitting up high but he doesn't need a large suv. He rarely has people or a bunch of stuff with him.
  • He goes to see clients frequently and doesn't want to show up in the newest, nicest car out there. I really think this is the reason he kept the Lexus for so long. It looked completely fine, but wasn't flashy.
  • He just moved to a condo and I don't believe there is any charger access in the parking garage.

Price Range?

The most likely answer is a Bronco.

Obviously I'm not there, but a blown head gasket isn't necessarily a death sentence for the 4.7

GX460 is a good suggestion as there is most certainly one to fit a variety of budgets.

The GX might the the right size so that he can still sit up high but not as big as the LX. Are there any model years to avoid due to persistent issues? It would be lexus so I assume probably not.

I would love for him to get a Bronco but unfortunately that is not his style.

I'm not there either so take what I say with a grain of salt, but essentially his mechanic said that with the issues he has been having (head gasket being the latest one) and with this engine, it would be a $4k repair and it is likely that they would still end up chasing problems around.
The repair cost would be a good chunk of what the car is worth and the mechanic couldn't promise him a satisfactory outcome.

We own a GX. It is our second one. It seems to be the Goldilocks size for us.

Can pull a trailer. Good AWD for snow. Soft ride. No mechanical issues.

I have a GX 460 in Nori Green Pearl and it's my favorite car I have owned.

He lives in a condo, drives in the city, and doesn't need to tow or haul a lot of stuff, I'm not seeing a lot of use case for a Lexus GX

How about Acura MDX Type-S?

Was about to post similar, although I think an MDX is still too big.

As much as I like a GX it's not great on gas. Should probably consider something in the RDX, RX350 range. I think everyone just sees that he's in a 20 year old car right now and are assuming he wants to keep the next car that long too. May or may not be true.

he drove an lx470. they are no worse in gas mileage than a gx460. I dont believe fuel economy is of concern.

I often think about the argument if a repair bill is larger than what the vehicle is worth, it's not worth fixing.

My question is, can you replace the vehicle for what will be spent on the repair?

But that's not why I'm asking.

Curious, how many miles does the LX have? Was it well taken care of?

I'm just curious of how toyota dies.
