I am feeling a little slip in between 2nd and 3rd in my wifes car.

is there any chance this is anything but a full on replacement?

wondering what yall think before I take it in next week.

should I go to Ford or a local shop?

My wife's just started doing the same thing (2019 Max) at 75,000 miles.

Let me know what you find out.

Have you looked at the fluid? When was it changed last?

Got to change the fluid on these things about every 30,000 miles.

This.

Drain and fill.

Ignore the 100K interval. It's too late by then

….sneaks off quietly with almost 350K on the factory fluid in a'17

Fwiw, I did finally order a gasket and filter kit last week. Pan drop is on my to do list.

My wife's started slipping last week. Pretty sure it's done for on a 2018 Expy.

Worth getting new fluid plus adding in a additive like Lubegard Platinum ATF Protectant or Hot Shot's Secret shift restore Transmission Additive.

Yeah, my 1999 Expedition started doing that around 220,000 miles. I'm at 254,000 and still successfully ignoring it.

The Boss's Explorer was slipping at 90k. 10k before the fluid was due. Had it flushed and filled, and purring for the last 12k.

Start with fresh fluid.

Those secondary additives actually work? I always assumed it was snake oil.

Anyone have what seems like transmission symptoms only to find out it was the throttle body?

EDIT: Meanwhile, my 1990 Land Cruiser just keeps going.

Are these the ten speeds or the ones before that.

What is recommended for ten speeds? They aren't as simple as drain and fill I don't believe. I really dislike the 10 speed. Has been rough shifting its whole life.

I had a 94 Grand Marquis that I used Ford Friction Modifier on for this same issue. Worked great. I'm assuming this stuff does something similar?

Ours was a couple of years ago... and was a full replacement. Took 10+ weeks to find one at the time. Even with a good buddy hookup... it was over $5k.

Between that and the seat belt pretensioner going off errantly as my wife tried to unbuckle, and then it starting to throw codes for the cam phasers, I had to get rid of it. It was a shame, when that Expy was performing right, it was a great vehicle for us. I just couldn't trust it to get the wife and kids out of town and back again anymore.

Just adding that my wife's 2021 Expy had transmission rebuilt at ~25kmi and now back in again for same transmission problems at ~38kmi. Not a reliable vehicle. We bought an extended warranty up to 60kmi and will sell prior. Have not had cam phaser issues yet.

thanks everyone...I have never changed the transmission fluid. Doing that today. will report back. Would it fix it immediately if that was going to work?

It did with the Explorer. Within 5-10 minutes or less of driving anyway. The power flush is as important as new fluid IMHO.

Are y'all talking about changing the fluid in the 10 speed?

17 and earlier Expy was 6 speed. 18 was the first year of 10 speed.

Well my 10 speed is shifting hard af and when we were under warranty they had to do something to it because of the hard shifting but that didn't really take care of it. 86k miles and I've never changed the fluid. Wonder if the damage is already done. I'm really unhappy with this vehicle overall tbh.

Yea on the old 6 speed & the newer 10 speed transmission. Need to change the fluid every 30k to 40k on them. Also add Lubegard Platinum ATF Protectant with the new fluid changes.

Will the Valvoline oil change place have this service? Going there now

I would just really make sure that kind of place has certified tech's that know what their doing. I don't trust those kind of spots unless they have been really vetted.

Fluid will probably not help it. Wife's 2018 Navigator just got a brand new transmission. I got monthly pay insurance a few months ago. They paid for replacement. My cost was 1600 to have a brand new one vs junkyard pull. These have some major problems that are easily researched, CDF drum bushings and such. Supposed to be fixed early 2023

Isn't it really hard to do a transmission fluid swap on these new "sealed" 10 speeds though? Gotta get up under there and have a pump to pump it out of the top of the transmission? I swear that's what I saw when I last looked at it.

I swear the last thread I saw in this gave completely different info.

It is not fun. Saying that from experience.
BurnetAggie99

On the 10 speed there is no drain plug like there used to be. So it's a pain in the butt. Have to drop the transmission pan.

Ford taking away the drain plug and also no more transmission stick to check/fill stem is stupid.
Sea Speed

And then you have to measure what you pull out to pump the same amount back in, correct? Don't you have to disconnect some other stuff to get the pan out as well? So absurd.

As someone who handles routine maintenance and a little more, (oil changes, brake pads/rotors, changing suspension, and I even installed a supercharger on my Jeep), I'd rather pay someone to handle the transmission on the expedition.

Yea man I my lean that way as well. I don't mind turning wrenches but this just sounds like it is going to annoy me. I am going to check with my guy and see what he would charge.
