We are starting to look for a vehicle for our soon to be 16 year old. I am looking more at a CRV, wife looking more at Volvo XC60. Looking to stay under $30k and under 40,000 miles.

What is the board's opinion on these two vehicles? Which years are the better models Any others you recommend?

$30k - are you open to adopting?

I wouldn't buy new or near new for a 16 y/o because it's most likely going to get wrecked. Especially if it's driven by a female who didn't pay for it (feel free to flame away).

We recently bought a 2016 Mazda CX-5 for my aging mother. It's a nice car, leather, decent tech, for around $15k. 90k miles.

Does she have a job? Help her shop for a clunker and she can buy it herself. Buy her a new car as a college graduation present.

What the above posters said. But it's your money.

I wouldn't look at the Volvo. In 6 years when she's graduating college, she now owns an out of warranty Volvo that is expensive to repair and won't be worth anything close to a CRV.

If that's your budget, I would look at a new Crosstrek. That way she's not stuck with a 2WD car when her first job is in Denver.

Aside from the money and niceness aspect, the near future of a 16 YO is too unpredictable to really make an informed decision on a car.

Of those two, a CRV for sure

You should be able to pull up auto trader and find pages and pages below $30,000 and 40K miles

I like the cross check suggestion and would also add the Forester and Impreza to the list. Also an older RAV4.

Volvos repair parts are expensive so beware.

A friend bought his 16 year old daughter a new Toyota rav 4 a couple years ago for her first car. It has been great and she will take it to college in August. She has helped pay for it with her job after school/ weekend.
Iirc it was low 40s.

This is why I don't want the Volvo. It's more expensive to buy and repairs are more expensive.

Take a test drive and kiss a curb in both of them to see how the suspension holds up to everyday driving.

ETA: I have 2 daughters and have learned that eBay is a cheap place to buy rims.

Having taught HS students for 10 years, the ones that took care of their cars had some skin in the game - i.e. they had to pay for the entire vehicle or half of it, etc. The ones whose cars were bought for them didn't take care of their cars, because they had no skin in the game. Just my $.02. I paid for all my cars since I got my first one, and have always taken care of them for that reason.

I'd get a 6-8 year old Mazda, Toyota, Honda, etc. No need to spend $30k when $15k and under will do the deal and be reliable.

But, it's your money.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

I bought my wife a 1yr old CRV in 2023 with only 10,000 miles for $32k (EX-L)

You should be able to lower your budget by at least $10k and easily get under the 40k miles for a CRV

I would add a Hyundai Elantra to that list
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

How are the CX5's? I am definitely fine lowering the budget. I just want something used that is safe and reliable. I don't want to have to spend a lot on repairs in the future.

CX5's are great. My wife drove a 2017 until a few months ago and never had any issues or repairs beyond normal maintenance.

The three I listed are all reliable with top safety ratings.

A co-worker said his teenage daughter managed to f-up the front suspension on both sides of her car in one drive. He asked her how she messed up both sides. She said she accidentally hit a curb with the passenger side front wheel and it started pulling to the right, so she intentionally hit a curb with the driver side wheel to try to straighten it out.

Forester, CX-5/50, RAV4, CRV

Forester has outstanding visibility and the best AWD system available. Looks are subjective but most would probably agree that it isn't as good looking as the Mazda. I'd go Forester over Crosstrek as your daughter will benefit from the cargo capacity when she goes to college. My wife and one daughter drive Foresters (no rule no. 1).

CX-5 arguably is the best looking ad most fun to drive and is another great choice. My other two daughters drive CX-5s. If I had to pick between the 4 models above for my own daily driver, I'd definitely prefer the Mazda (zoom zoom).

One thing to be aware of with AWD. "They" say you shouldn't have any significant difference in tread wear between tires. I don't think I've made it through a set of tires yet without getting an unrepairable flat which required me to replace all 4 tires well before the tread was too low. If you don't need AWD you may want to consider that.

Pretty much in a similar boat, shopping for a car for 17 yr old daughter. Looking at XC40, XC60, RAV-4, CRV, Subarus and Mazda and trying to stay under $35k for new or near new.

People say "get an old beater because they'll definitely wreck it". My thoughts are if they are going to definitely wreck something I want my loved ones in as safe of a car as possible and old beaters aren't as safe as new cars, especially Volvos.

Along those lines I was going to give her my AT4 because I liked the idea of her being in a large vehicle but I came to the conclusion she needs something a little smaller after she demolished a brick mailbox while backing out of a dark driveway taking a friend home.

As far as Volvos go they are a little more expensive than a Honda or Toyota but in my experience it hasn't been crazy. My wife is on her second Volvo, her first had 185k miles on it when we traded it in for her second Volvo. The second one has 50k miles and no issues, the first one had one repair that cost me about $1800 (at the dealership) at around 90k miles. The rest of the time it was normal maintenance like oil changes and air filters that I did myself at home and I changed the spark plugs at 100k miles and even that was very simple. However, If you're planning on using the dealership for service be aware that a normal oil change is almost $200.

If you want to be amazed, look at statistics for fatalities while driving Volvos. Those stats make me feel a ton better about spending a little more on maintenance.

In all my years of watching Law & Order, I don't recall this happening but,

The prosecution rests Your Honor

For the record, I backed over my Uncle's mailbox in my 1975 K5 Blazer. He rebuilt it and made it brick.

That's some good data. But when we say new drivers will likely wreck, I don't think we mean major collisions that are life-threatening. More like door scrapers, fender benders and bumper damage. That's my experience with three kids.

I agree, based on my limited experience as well teen drivers will definitely have some dings/dents and cause some damage.

I am willing to accept that as the cost of doing business with a teen driver but my perspective is that I just want them to be as safe as possible if they make a mistake at highways speeds or are involved in a crash with another vehicle.

In short, I'm ok if they do some minor albeit potentially expensive damage if they are better protected against catastrophic outcomes.

We put my son in a 2018 Mazda 6 for 23k. 2.5 turbocharged option. Only 23k miles and no wrecks. It's a fantastic car. Fun to drive and averages about 27 miles/gal. combined. Tons of room and trunk space.

My wife drives a CX-9 and loves it. My daughter has a 23 Miata hardtop and loves it. (She's 22 and on her own, so a great time to own a two seater). We've owned 4 Mazdas and all have been extremely reliable.

I chose Mazda over Honda, Nissan because I'm weary of CVT, plus CVT's are boring to drive. Also considered Toyota, but their price point is too high.

I had my sales guy keep an eye out for the Mazda6. He called me as soon as they had one pending just so I could get first dibs.

Another upvote for a CX-5. My wife's is a 2016.5 with 95k, and I've onky done routine maintenance. Oh, and I replaced the infotainment system with an aftermarket CarPlay unit.

You can buy a perfectly safe used car or SUV for under $10k. Almost every car made since 2010 has side airbags + the normal front ones, cumple zones, etc.

"Old Beater" = 2010+ Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda 6, CRV, Rav4, Highlander, Pilot....anyone one of those vehicles is crazy safe compared to what most of us grew up driving and won't cost you an arm and a leg to maintain, or even fix if a kid wrecks it.

Is her iPhone 16 Pro's screen cracked or had to be replaced? How they tackle care of their other expensive things gives you a glimpse into how they'll take care of a vehicle.

I'm a big fan of the CX-5 I got my son about 7 years ago. It's held up well thru college. The upper trim -5 and -50's should be under your budget if a few years old I'd think. I'd avoid the turbo though just because kids rarely keep up with the oil changes really helpful to them.

I'm giving my 2019 CX-5 to my daughter when she turns 16 next year. I think it's a great car for a new driver.

Things I like about it for a new driver, (I'm not sure which trim levels have these features) Automatic Braking, Lane departure warning/correction, reasonably reliable, no major issues in 120k miles, decent gas mileage, AWD to keep her from spinning tires when trying to accelerate while turning into traffic.

Some things I don't like are small gas tank, I have the NA engine which is slow but that could be a positive for a new driver.

Our daughter got my dad's low mileage Highlander. Very safe and reliable. She dented it by hitting a parked car before she even got her license in the mail.

Since then, so far so good.
