Low annual mileage - how often to oil change?

I have two cars I switch between and both are out of warranty so I was curious what you guys would do in my situation.

Car #1 is a 2013 Jeep Wrangler with about 70k miles
Car #2 is a 2020 Honda CRV with about 20k miles

OEM recommendation for Jeep says 7.5k miles or 6 months
OEM recommendation for the CRV is to go off the oil life indicator

I only dive about 5k miles per year on each car so recently I have been doing annual oil changes since I use mobil 1 and a wix xp filter. Changing the jeep every 6 months seems excessive as I would only be at 2.5k miles and I am using pretty good oil. The CRV going over a year before the oil life indicator goes off seems like its too long as well which is why I usually just have it looked over and the oil changed when I do my annual inspection.

Assuming the oil looks clean at 1 year & isn't low I would stick with that.

Year is often enough if there are no other factors. I'd just avoid leaving either sitting for too long at a stretch

The Jeep is used pretty much daily and the crv is used at least once or twice a week so neither ever sits for too long. The jeep probably gets the worst of it with mostly short trips going under 50mph and the CRV is used when I need to go across town on the highway. So the CRV always gets up to temp and drive enough to recharge the battery and the jeep does more of the short stuff.

Similar issue. I have a 2016 Cadillac with 40k miles that is down to about 3k miles per year. I drive it on weekends. I probably need to get one of those battery extender devices but so far have just been following the oil indicator for changes.

It depends on if you're driving it long enough for the oil to reach operating temperature or not. If it is only driven a few miles at a time then fuel dilution could be an issue which would diminish oil viscosity. Shorter drive intervals usually means change the oil more frequently.

My daily driver is low mileage so I get my oil changed every 6 months per 1Ags.

Oil sitting in the pan isn't degrading while your car hibernates in your garages. Change it when your vehicle tells you until your warranty is up, then go by mileage only.

I change mine yearly in my truck that sees less than 1k/year these days. Piece of mind mainly and it's cheap. I do keep it on a battery tender as well.

family friend has a vehicle that was rarely driven. 5 years since the last oil change and 3k miles. Oil came out looking like any other vehicle after 3k miles. Didn't seem like it ran any different with old and new oil. No change to gas mileage either.

^^^^^^^ Nonsense

Every 3K to 4K. Oil is cheaper than an engine.

The every 200,000 miles (OK 7.5... 10K) i designed give the driver a "less maintenance" mindset.

Oil or engine. Don't believe the idiot light (or mileage recommendation).

5K a year? Then change it once a year. Those low mileage trips? Brutal on an engine.

C'mon, man.

Yeah I currently change it once year but thinking about doing it more frequently than that. The jeep says every 6 months which I think might be a little fast since I would have less than 3k miles at the 6 month mark, the crv says go by the oil life light which I know is too long bc it would over a year between changes. So I had been doing the jeep less than recommended (going over 6 months but not miles) and the crv more than recommended (every year despite the oil light never coming on). I'll probably start changing the jeeps oil more often and keeping a closer eye on any signs of consumption and stick with the annual for the crv.

If you do a lot of short trips which make up the miles then change it more frequently. My daughter drives 2 miles to school and back most trips with a few longer trips. I did a used oil analysis on her oil at 3,700 miles and she had a high amount of fuel dilution which degrades oil viscosity. She drives a Mazda cx-30 which is direct injection, if you have port injection it may not be as big of a factor. That's said, there is no real way to know without doing lab analysis but you don't need to do that, just do a six month interval if you do a lot of short trips. Its cheap.

I will change every spring and fall.

Daughter averages about 4K miles per year.

I also have a 2016, but Toyota, and use the occasional Vavoline coupon mailer (10% off for full synthetic) every 5,000 to 7,000 miles.

Your 2016 is more conducive for runs to JoAnns Fabrics than mine though.
