Not going to pay $495 a year so the truck drives for me while I have to hold the steering wheel and pay attention, or birches at me if I look down for a nanosecond.

It spammed me with constant "Blue Cruise Available" notifications for the month prior to it ending.

Which genius at Ferd thought this was a good idea to charge subscriptions for things other cars already include?

Mine just ran out. The difference between Blue Cruise hands free and the non subscription version requiring hands on is minimal. No way I'm paying that kind of money for that feature. I'm somewhat underwhelmed by the lane keeping feature's tendency to ping pong any way and prefer just the adaptive cruise control.

And it automatically disengages if you set your cruise control above 80 along with the fact it's rare to go more that 5 miles or so without it turning off for a stretch.

It's a way for them to continue to make money off a vehicle already sold. I can see this happening more and more in the future as the bean counters figure out ways to increase profit while nickel and diming customers.

Want heated and cooled seats? That will be $10 per month. Want lane keeping assist and blind spot monitoring? $10 per month. Want CarPlay? $5 per month or we can do a package deal at $20 per month for you to keep all of the options.

They will do this while saying they are going to cut the cost of a vehicle up front on purchase. They all know more money is to be made off subscriptions.

There will be a robust community hacking those systems just like with BMW and euro brands today. Though its going to be harder with new connected cars that manufacturers can patch on the fly over the air.

If it's enabled over the canbus, someone will sniff the traffic and figure out the correct packets/authorization codes to enable the features full time.

Don't get me wrong, this is annoying. But seems there are way better examples than hands free driving. Don't most companies charge subscriptions for self/hands free driving? I mean it is something that does likely require lots of continual inputs and updates.

I put most of the onus on the jackholes at BMW for really getting this trend going.
