Trying to make a list and narrow down which SUVs we're going to test drive this summer before making a purchase.

As title suggest, we're looking for an SUV with a 3rd row to kiddos for road trips and various athletic events. Currently in a 16' Tahoe that's been through the rigger raising two young boys but open to any and all suggestions. Wife absolutely refuses to consider a minivan.

Here's where it gets a little tricky. She's 5' and I'm 6'-7". We would like something that both of us can drive and legroom is by far the biggest challenge. (Think 38"-40" inseam for me)

Thanks in advance for the advice and suggestions!
Show her the difference in not only price to purchase, but operating costs and promise to use that saving to take her to Hawaii, Caribbean, Europe, whatever every other year. Congrats on the hotel sex.

This is the back of the wagoneer… we had a lot of stuff. And I mean a lot. Ski trip plus groceries for 4 people

Why do the smallest people require the most amount of stuff?

That's an understatement. You even have a toilet.

My mom has an Enclave, but it's probably too small for your needs. My wife has a Kicks, but it's also on the smaller side. I have a 4Runner Limited, which might work for your specifications. My stepfather has his father's 2001 Expedition, which could also work, but I'd definitely get a later model year.
I have a 4Runner. I love it. I hope I die with that vehicle. But I wouldn't recommend it for the OP. It's utilitarian and will run forever. But with the 3rd row up there's no cargo room, there's not a lot of adjustment for different size drivers, and it's not the most comfortable for roadtrips. It fits for me because I wanted something that will run forever that can also go offroad, but at that price point there are more options that tick more boxes for the OP.

Late reply, may have been mentioned elsewhere but didn't read whole thread

Starting in 2021, GM in all its idiocy quit putting adjustable pedals in their truck platforms. Various websites will tell you they are available on the Denali or the controls were moved to the touch screen or they're available on certain packages. They're not. The platform doesnt even have the *******s to mount them.

If your wife is 5'0" she is probably used to the adjustable pedals. GM hates its customers though, so my 5'0" wife is trading into an Expedition

Edit: it's amusing that the name for a metal mounting lug is filtered

6'8" w/ a 5' 10" wife here. Had a highlander initially when we just had one kid and it was outstanding, so long as you didn't need to use the third row. Then had twins and went straight to a 23 expedition max. I can even crawl in the third row and sit somewhat comfortably with the seat reclined. 3 boys and planning on keeping the vehicle long term also led me toward a full size suv. Looked at suburbans as well but the interior on the 23s was dated when compared to ford, however that might have since changed.

Really wanted to make a telluride/palisade work but the legroom just wasn't there, especially with car seats in the middle row.

Don't listen to the peanut gallery who will start chirping about not being manly enough to drive a minivan or insisting it's the only logical choice, the legroom just isn't there, especially with car seats.

Just get a new Tahoe. They are about 17.5' long, so 1.5' longer than your current 16' Tahoe.

I'd just go for the Suburban.

I got a new Tahoe last year and it's been great. But I wish I had a suburban. Between trying to haul the two dogs, stuff for two kids and the wife/I, we are a bit squeezed. I'm 6'4" While she's 5'8" and we are having to put stuff in the front passenger seat. I hate strollers.

Wife has fallen in love with the GX550. Its a tighter squeeze for me but manageable.

I'm looking at the grand highlander now. I really like the model you got, but I'm torn about the backseat captains chairs. Have one little one and plan for more in the future, so bench seats allows 2 car seats and a seat in the middle for mom if need be. I did hear that the console they have in between the captains chairs is removable, which is a plus.

Don't torture someone to sit in between 2 of them.

Our road trips, my wife is relegated to the third row after about 2.5 hours. From there she can help the two in bucket seats (5yr old and 1yr old) and also get some sanity by herself. We just keep 1 seat folded on the third and the rest flipped down for cargo.

That picture illustrates why we had to go from a Grand Cherokee to an Expedition after the second kid was born.

My wife couldn't stand having to pack everything precisely correct in the back of the Grand Cherokee. She liked being able to just haphazardly throw stuff in the back of the Expedition.
you spent $80,000 b/c your wife is no good at Tetris?

we are similar. Short wife and me who is six foot five in addition to a set of 2nd grade twins. The new gx is likely our next move at the end of this year or early next year. She doesn't want a full size Tahoe type vehicle but we also need something built on a truck based platform. Not many options out there. We went to west side Lexus a few weeks back and checked them out. I was surprised by the amount of room it has. Currently she drives a 4runner and the new GX feels much bigger on the inside compared to it.

I have a 4Runner Limited, but the 3rd row would be a little tight. Some of the other Toyota models would be a better option for that.

My brother has 2 Expeditions (Ford), and my stepfather has his deceased father's Expedition. However, these are all older models and I'd try to get a model year closer to the present. My mom looked at various options after her 300 (Chrysler, a bad purchase) refused to work past 65,000 miles. She ended up with a new Enclave (GM / Buick). My wife has a Kicks (Nissan), but I would probably avoid these models given your stated needs.

I try to rent a ford expedition when traveling. Plenty of legroom for 6'2 and the fords have the most comfortable seats compared to chevys. Lexus, and Toyota products.
Can slide the seats way back in the expeditions.

Maybe, and I'm just spitballing here, the average poster on the Entertainment board, and the average poster here on the Auto board are different, and are looking for different kinds of input.

On the Auto board we're looking for direct answers based on actual knowledge or commiseration and funny stories about how a similar situation drove us to drink or cuss. In general, we like our posters to add value either with facts or humor.

Every one of your post starts by rattling off every car owned by your whole family, including the one inherited from a dead relative. And then 99% of the time the post ends with you saying you are not familiar with the subject of the OP. Honestly, it seems like you are just posting to increase your post count, but when I looked at your history that made no sense.

This may be the first thread where you were actually on topic, only because someone before you brought up the 4-Runner which would never in a million years be the correct vehicle for the OP.

Maybe try a different approach. One, if you have nothing to add, don't post. We don't care to hear about all the cars your family owns a billion times when you have nothing constructive to add to the conversation.

And drop the BOT-like posting protocol of listing all your family cars. If you have something to add, or a question to ask, great, we're a pretty welcoming bunch of people over here, trying to help each other out. But you come across as a BOT or someone that just likes to talk even when they have nothing useful to say, and that combination doesn't foster affection on this board.

There's a reason why we still have my 2016 Navigator and two previous generation sequoias. The newer versions don't seem to be as reliable or roomy (in the case of the Sequoia) and they're really expensive. If you must have a new vehicle, Id look at the Suburbans, but Id first encourage you to consider a low mileage used Sequoia.

Is there a sweet spot year range on the Yukon/Suburban between price, reliability, and tech options? We're in this boat too and I'm probably going to start looking at used vehicles.

Had one as a rental for a trip with my wife before we had kids, not a bad little car. Now my grandfather on my mother's side (may he rest in peace) always drive a Ford pickup....

Appreciate this, and provided the 3rd for your Turn Blue.

For the OP, if you decide to be a split Toyota / Nissan family like ours, I'd start with Sequoia, Land Cruiser, and Armada, which are larger models (3rd row).
