my son down in CSTAT drives my old 2016 Expedition, about 165k on it. Local shop is telling him he needs the catalytic converter replaced, but I had that done 3-4 years ago before I gave it to him. Do these things only last that long? I would love a second opinion, if anyone has a suggestion on where he can take it for another look. Thanks.
There may not be time to do the job right, but there is always time to do the job over!!

Does he only drive it 3 miles to school and back? Does he let it sit and idle for long periods?

It might be bad.

He needs to give it an Italian tune-up every now and then. 20 miles on the highway at a high speed will help burn the crust out of a Cat.

For a second option I trust Rusty at the Rusty Muffler in Bryan explicitly.

Unless it's running rough, why spend the money ?

Well, he actually has a job on a site at Rellis, but tbh, he drives like a grandmother. It's my only complaint. I'll pass this on.

Is it something that can wait? I am not much on the auto knowledge.

Unless it's running rough I'd leave it alone.
Clear the CEL before it's inspected if you live in an emissions county.

Are you in an emissions county or state? If not, don't worry about them. They are useless. I've been running bad cats on my 2017 for 200,000 miles and have never had an actual problem with the engine running due to the sensor feedback.

Lots of short trips is not great for the ecoboost. It needs highway miles on the regular to warm up and run clean. Short trips = cold thick oil, cold cats, and condensation in the intake system. Those things all need to spend time running at operating temp regularly.

Thanks everyone. I knew I could get educated here by guys with knowledge I do t have. It seems like we can clear the CEL and give it a go.

The second O2 sensor in almost all cars just measures CAT efficiency. It's not like the 1st O2 sensor that helps control the fuel/air mixture.

You can usually make the error code go away with a spark plug extender/de-fouler.

You used the term cstat that will always cause cats to fail prematurely.
