Is there another purchase that feels like a waste of money

Maybe you're buying the wrong tires.

When I buy a good set of Michelins or other highly rated tires for my wife or daughter, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are safer in adverse conditions. I research the hell out of those purchases on tire rack looking for the best wet stopping distance and the highest resistance to hydro-planing.

When I buy AT tires for my 4x4 truck there is just as much research but there is also some gratification from the look of an aggressive AT tire.

When I buy tires for my EVO they are often the next big thing in 200TW street/track tires and I've started paying tire rack to heat cycle them for me so when I get them mounted I can see they are going to make me at least 0.5 sec quicker around the track

So you're either buying the wrong tires, or you're not a car -guy?

So, because I get no real satisfaction on spending almost $1500 for a set of tires for an Accord I'm not a car guy? You sound just like a stereotypical car forum guy with an over inflated ego and sense of self-worth. If you're not checking their tread depth everyday before leaving, how can you work knowing you're potentially leaving them on side of the road?

But the point still remains, there's no real sense of satisfaction with buying tires. You can try to tell yourself it's for the safety of loved ones to make you feel more like a man, but there are so many other things that don't drain your wallet and a few hours out of a weekend that will scratch that itch.

If you're getting new wheels and larger tires to achieve a look, or track tires or something, yeah. But for an everyday vehicle? Nah.
I'm sorry, I have no choice but to ban you from the automotive forum and scrub the page of your posting history. Nothing personal, just business.

Because I work in construction zones, the money I spend on the Discount Tire warranty is probably the best ROI of anything I will ever invest in.

I hate spending money on new tires but I really like having new tires.
Much rather buy an older high mileage car and throw high performing tires on it than have a near new luxury sled and slap chinese cheapos on it.

more than tires? I had to get new tires for my car today and it occurred to me that there's nothing I buy that feels like a bigger waste of money...and I had season tickets during the Fran years.

At least with other purchases, you get some form of gratification from it, no matter how small. With tires, I'm like "I can drive the same speed but for more miles now." At least with gas, I get the satisfaction of seeing the gauge read "F".
Golf cart tires feel worse. My alignment was off on a golf cart and all the tread worn off of the inside edges of the front wheels. I just spent a shocking amount to fix the alignment and replace the two front tires after only about three years and 3k miles. Replacing the batteries in the next couple of years is going to feel even worse.

Shouldn't those be like $200 a piece?
My golf cart tires were about $180 each!

We had a couple carts at work converted to Lithium Ion. Buy once, cry once!

But man it's an improvement. And it's just one battery under the seat now. Not six or eight or whatever it was. That's quite a weight savings!

But to the OP's question: homeowners insurance. That feels like lighting money on fire.
I'm 55 years old and never had to file a home or auto claim*. Auto on my insurance, I was hit by a stoned guy and the owner's auto insurance paid.

This is why you shouldn't be buying boring vehicles like trucks and SUV's.

Nothing feels better on a good handling car than a fresh set of tires. It is the biggest thing you can do a car to improve every metric that you measure performance by.

That stretch of 45, 290 north of Cypress to 6, and then a lot of 6, we were probably 110-120 average with some springs beyond that in a few places. Our slowest for sure was between 610 getting through downtown and the cluster that was, but it was late on a Sunday, so not as bad as it could have been.

Again, not the smartest thing I've done in my life, and although I still love motorcycles, I don't see myself ever owning one again.

That 760 probably makes it hard to tell if you're going 70 or 100. I will probably never own a German car, but I get why people love them when I drive one.
Yeah, the 760 definitely feels like you're doing 60 mph when you're really doing 95 mph.

Last month, I spent a few days driving on the Autobahn in Germany and a few days driving in Saudi Arabia.

In Germany, I got the Audi A6 (on snow tires) up to 212 kmh (131 mph).
In Saudi, the speed limit between Riyadh and Dammam was 140 kmh (87 mph) which surprisingly, my 3 cyl Toyota Corolla was able to do while still blowing cold AC while it was 116F outside.

After those experiences, getting back to Texas, its quite an adjustment to try to keep my speed down to 70 mph (113 kmh).

Was this one of those crazy Texas A&M golf carts they use on campus with a lift and custom rims?

Similar - a burgundy/maroon 6-seater but no lift kit or Rev images embroidered on the seats. My rims are black, not chrome.

Its basically a slow electric car with a sound system, backup camera, windshield wipers etc. but no doors.

There is no better Motorsport-related feeling than a new set of tires on a motorcycle. And you replace those way more often than car tires.

Oh yeah. After I graduated and moved back to Houston, I switched to track only (TWS, MSR-H, MSR-C, & Hallett), and I'd have to get a new set of tires every 2-3 track days. I wasn't putting in the lap times some do, so my tires lasted a bit longer. For that, I always loved a new set of tires because I could feel the difference.

I remember I was at MSR-H when they ran the track CCW, and I was on the carousel right after the front straight thinking I was putting down a pretty good lap, but then out of nowhere, some dude found a couple inches on the inside and went blowing past me. Scared the chit out of me. I was talking to a guy next to me in the pits about it, and he asked which bike it was. When I told him, he told me the guy's name, and he was a guy that raced AMA Supersport who was out there testing/tuning the bike. I looked him up and he was, and given how fast he was out there but not getting top-10 finishes, I could only imagine how fast the Superbike guys like Spies and Mladin were, and knew I'd be blown away by how fast somebody like Rossi was on the GP bikes (which were still 2-stroke at the time, IIRC).

Love buying tires. Michelin Pilot Super Sports on my car and BFG KO2s on my wife's SUV. Looking forward to mine wearing out so I can go another 10mm wider on the rear.

I absolutely LOVE buying quality tires. They can transform the driving experience.

Cheap tires are false economy.

Shopping for tires is like being a kid at baskin Robbins. All the flavors to choose from.

Do you have any data to back the economics up? As a buyer of cheap tires, I'm genuinely curious.

I am sure there are some formal studies, but I'm not going to look for them. I do know I've read data that the Highway Traffic Government entity attributes a large number of accidents to tires. I assume that means due to worn tires - handle bad, especially in rain - or tires that flat out fail, which isn't necessarily a cheap tire. It's on the owner to replace worn tires, but which tires typically wear faster, cheap or expensive? Which tires are more prone to failure, cheap knock off brands or major name brands?

If it wears faster, or fails catastrophically, then at a minimum you have to buy new tires more frequently or at worst you have the cost of an accident and increased insurance rates to pay for.

Since an accident is a major cost, anything to reduce the chance of an accident seems financially prudent.

If you are a slow driver, or live somewhere it barely ever rains or snows, and you often check your cheap tire treads to see if replacement is needed - then perhaps financially it saves you, what, $600 over 40K miles?
