Lug nuts over torqued. Slightly stretches lug. Then when you try to remove the nut, the threads get in a bind since they are no longer at the specified pitch, and the nut won't back off, so the nut has to be cut off or the lug stripped or snapped and then pressed out and replaced.

Good news is that the mechanic shop agreed to replace at their cost. Unfortunately, pickup is laid up waiting for instrument cluster repair to arrive

What was the instrument cluster repair? The speedometer on my '05 Chevy is getting jumpy and occasionally hangs up, happens for about a week then is normal for months before it happens again. I'm thinking it's a stepper motor but that's as far as I've gotten into diagnosing it.

Main problem was the trip/ odometer wouldn't cycle. Small thing, but I sent it to a rebuild shop. All new stepper motors, etc. Basically I just wanted to have it as close to perfect as possible

In my experience, the vehicle will run without the cluster, but the battery won't charge. So expect to be out of service for a week or so

Maybe he used to work for NASCAR
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

We used to race on straight rotations with a speed socket (7/8" shallow socket & no torque stick) on those model chevys. I could whoop a few assess back in the day…

Not saying this is what happened hut hand threading the lug nuts a couple of turns first and not tightening one of the lugs while the others are loose and the rim is not seated all the way on the hub is how this crap happens. Rookie move, man.

Update: took the pickup back to them, they fixed it, the owner was very apologetic. I offered to pay for the parts and let him cover the labor, but he insisted on covering it all.

Though there is not much chance of any of you guys using him, I will give the info, since the rest of his work was good and he took care of this.

He replaced the leaking master cylinder and lines from it (hydra-boost) to the power steering pump, as well as rear brakes, in the original job

I didn't have a choice and got to change pads and a rotor on the Excursion on a Sunday in an Autozone parking lot in Trinidad, CO. She will be getting pads and rotors on all 4 coroners when we get back and the calipers serviced.

Also getting a proper jack and tools. Literally used one of the new brake pad tabs as a screw driver on the woefully undersized bottle jack.
