I recently got an 86 GMC suburban. It was sitting for a while before I got it but I put in a new battery and it started right up. It didnt run long because I wanted to dump the old gas. Once I get the old gas out and go back to start it I get nothing. There's power but it won't turn over. Searching online told me to replace the ignition switch but nothing changed. Any advice for me?

Neutral safety switch? If you turn the key and… nada; I usuallly suspect safety switch. Sometimes jiggling the transmission lever, or pulling it through P- R-N-D and back again with the key in the start position will yield a bump or click that is a dead giveaway.

Either way - if there is no power to the solenoid and you've replaced the ignition switch the safety switch would me my next thing to check.

Did you make sure to install proper ignition switch? When I did switch on my K5, there were different switches for the different columns.

Good thought but it doesn't have one, its a factory manual.

This is possible. I replaced it with the same part I took out and my research told me the main difference is if it has tilt column or not and even then its the same part just the bracket is flipped over. However I did order another one though O'Reilly that said its for console shift so we'll see.

Just scatter-shooting ...

EDIT: Just realized it's not even turning over. I saw the connection to the drained fuel and misunderstood. Good luck.

if it doesn't turn over double check your battery connections and maybe give the starter a thump with a hammer

check power at starter using test light. if no power starting working backwards in circuit: fusible link, fuses, corrosion, connections, and also check to see if battery has good charge.

Clutch safety replaced and still nothing. I jumped the starter with the key on and it started and ran so that means its something with the ignition switch or safety right? I uninstalled them and reinstalled them making sure all the connections are good and still nothing. What am I missing? I did pull some fuses under the dash and they were fine.

There are two fusibke links to check. One on the firewall brake booster side of center, and another connected to the starter. I've had the starter one leave me stranded more than once.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep it in mind. I
My problem ended up being the rod from the ignition switch wasn't pulling enough and was able to adjust where the switch was sitting. Simple fix that I overlooked. Thanks all.
