I'm of the same mind on this issue. Although for my own personal application, I try to use the manufacture brand but it's not always the cheaper option. I've gone the last few oil changes trying to at least match the filter maker, as shown in the video I posted above. Haven't seen any performance issues or that the oil seems darker than previous changes at 5k.

IMO, the bigger issue is the time interval considering the harsh nature of the driving between intervals. If you run the vehicle hard, maybe change earlier than the interval, you run it soft, change it as close to the interval as you can get.

My personal anecdotes.

Just sold my 2013 3.5L Boost truck with 173k miles on it. I changed the oil every 5k and used Mobil1 synthetic and a Mobil1 filter probably 90% of the time.

I had zero oil related issues on the Gen 1 Ecoboost.

My wife's 2017 Exploder also has the same 3.5L Ecoboost and have been doing the exact same 5k changes. No oil related issues there either. Actually, no issues at all mechanically, but every other part of that damned car is falling apart.

I plan to do the same interval on my brand new 3.5L Ecoboost truck too. If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

If you change your oil at 5K miles you can get away with really any filter you want. I use Motorcraft filters on my Fords and AC Delco on my LS swaps.

My 2014 Silverado I traded at 188K last July without ever touching anything other than (1) battery, tires, and an AC rebuild. I have always ran napa gold (which I think Wix makes), and Valvoline Synthetic oil. Coupled with a Fumoto drain valve with nipple, 3ft of rubber hose ran from Fumoto into drain pan, makes at home oil changes in less than 10 mins and clean.

Chevys are so easy too. Props to them for putting the filter right next to the plug

I changed my Ram 5.7 yesterday as a father/son learning day. My wife asked my son after we were done"what did you learn?"

He replied "Ram makers are idiots for where they put the filter! It's right over the steering component!"
