I am looking for a used, full size truck for my son. Looking in the $25k range and under 100k miles which appears to be in that 2017-2020 range. It's been frustrating, the only consistent advice is pretty much good luck and hope it's not a bad one.

Looking for any insight on different brands, and even more reliable years vs years to avoid. Here is the limited info I have been told:

Tundra - most reliable but also hard to find in the budget

F150 - expect transmission problems, and other problems

Chevy - same as ford

GMC - not sure but probably same as Chevy

Ram - expect manifold issues, probably lifter issues. The 5.7 Hemi is just a poorly designed engine to rely on for higher miles.

We are not loyal to any brand. Just trying to find a solid truck that can last 7-8 years and 200k miles. Any help is appreciated.

For what you described, keep looking for a tundra. I had 2, 2011 and 2016 which went to 175k and 205k without Any major problems. Just changed the engine oil and filter, and air filter regularly. So I wouldn't worry about 100k being a hard limit, especially if it hadn't towed things very often.

Put a want to buy ad here in the classifieds and automotive with your parameters and bump every week. Maybe someone will have or find what you're looking for.

I agree with the Tundra recommendation. I've had two Tacomas and the first one was running fine at 181k. The one I have now has about 175k and really no problems either.

My life would be simpler if I kept my 2012 Tundra; only struts, 2 water pumps, and valley leak, and sold at 285K miles when I bought an LX570.

Wanted a LandCruiser too long and getting my cats stolen for some reason was the last straw.

That's a great truck but out of our price range. If we go the tundra route, it would need to be way more basic.

We had a chance at a really clean Ram for $26k but that engine concerns me.

I said we have no bias but my wife is on her second tundra. We really like them, but keeping options open for this search.

From what I learned on this board, if the Ram is gonna crap out it will be 50-70,000 miles. Look for one with 80k on the clock. Look at most of the landscapers trucks. If Ram didn't last, they wouldn't be at work.
