Open discussion on what everyone does when they have that new car itch?

New wheels?

Detail it?

New air freshener?

Go turo something for a few days?

All inquiries accepted other than "go buy new car"

Research cars and pricing. Consider my self-imposed 6 vehicle limit. Try to figure out which vehicle I'm willing to sell/trade. Decide I don't want to give up one of my current vehicles.

This looks like a car dealership, but it's actually 1ag's driveway.

With enough poor financial decisions, you too can walk outside and be at a car show!

Buy something that's fun and old enough that the depreciation curve already hit. When you sell it you won't be out all that much.

  • Fly somewhere like Vegas or LAX and rent a car
  • Figure out how to pair your phone and navigate away from the airport.
  • Drive it for a day or two and get frustrated with all the new "features" and controls.
  • When you get home, you'll be over the immediate need
Or, if you're close to Houston, go to Hobby Airport and rent something outside the norm of your daily driver like an F-250.

Probably the most out of the ordinary rental I ever tried was a Nissan Cube at LAX. It wasn't nearly as fun as I was hoping it would be.

That said, as someone who rents several times a month, the new Blue Cruise is pretty nice. I had a Expedition Tremor that drove completely hands free on the highway and would even change lanes when I signaled.

I replaced the head unit the last time I had the itch. Adding wireless CarPlay scratched that itch and would have gotten me 10 more years out of the car if not for the mice chewing the wires when it sat for weeks at a time during COVID.

I literally started a car dealership back in 2022 because of this. I got to go to auctions, buy cars, drive them and then sell them. That itch got infected pretty quickly though. Selling cars is such an ass whip most of the time. I think I only had 1-2 easy transactions.

The real answer has already been said, find a fun car that has hit the bottom of the depreciation curve or even the few that are appreciating. My favorite right now is a 1968-1972 corvette big block with a manual. These things are gaining value every year. 2017-2019 Corvette z06 manual. These have blown up in the last year or so. any 10 year old 911. These aren't gaining value but you won't lose much at all.

Bonus points if you can set up an LLC in Montana and avoid the Texas sales tax. Taking a 6% hit really f's up the even money deal.

From AI
Quote:

Key Benefits
  • Zero Sales Tax: Montana does not impose a state sales tax on vehicle purchases. For high-value assets like luxury cars or RVs, this can save owners anywhere from $5,000 to over $30,000 compared to high-tax states like California or New York.
  • No Property Tax: Unlike many other states, Montana does not charge an annual personal property tax on most vehicles, further reducing long-term ownership costs.
  • No Inspections: There are no mandatory vehicle safety inspections or emissions (smog) tests required for registration in Montana.
  • Permanent Registration: Vehicles that are 11 years old or older are eligible for permanent registration. This is a one-time fee that eliminates the need for annual renewals for as long as the vehicle is owned.
  • Asset Protection & Privacy: As a separate legal entity, the LLC provides a layer of liability protection by shielding personal assets from lawsuits related to the vehicle. Additionally, the LLC's namenot yoursappears on public title and registration records.
Critical Risks and Considerations
While these benefits are legal under Montana law, they are often heavily scrutinized by other states and insurers as of 2026:
  • Home-State Enforcement: Many states consider this practice "tax evasion" if the vehicle is primarily garaged and driven in a high-tax state. Authorities may use license plate readers and data sharing to catch offenders, potentially leading to back taxes, hefty penalties, or even felony charges.
  • Insurance Challenges: Major insurance carriers frequently deny coverage or refuse to pay claims if they discover a Montana-registered vehicle is being garaged long-term in another state.
  • Maintenance Costs: Owners must pay annual fees to maintain the Montana LLC and a registered agent service, even after obtaining permanent plates

I first saw one at a highway rest stop on the way to Fuji Speedway in 2006 while I was on tour with a Latin Rock Band (true story) and I thought it was the cutest little thing (also, the most ridiculous looking thing).

So, a decade later, when I had the opportunity to rent one, I took it. It was kind of disappointing.

A much more fun rental was driving a Mini Cooper from JFK to Boston to Vermont and back.

You raise another good point. Sometimes I wind up with rental cars that are above the trim level that I would actually purchase myself. That can be fun too, trying to figure out what all the extra stuff is in the car.

On different trips to Boston, I've had a Ford Expedition Max, a Cadillac Escalade and an Infiniti QX80.

In Monterey, California, the only car they had on one of my trips was an optioned up Infiniti Q50. Oh well. LOL

One time renting in Austin, I got a Ford Explorer with the rear liftgate thing where you could use your foot to open it. It didn't do much for me but my dad (1936-2025) thought it was the coolest thing (probably saw it advertised on TV too many times and just had to try it).

The only times I've intentionally rented a higher end car have been in Germany. Turns out the max you can drive on the Autobahn with snow tires is about 210 kmh (130 mph).

My Hyundai has a feature where if the doors are locked and you have the fob in your pocket, it will beep three times then open the hatch. It's cool when I need it, but I've accidentally opened the hatch a few times while trying to do something else.

Literally watch my families future be completely altered because of car notes. That money can go to more wealth generating vehicles.

I've learned that the wishing and wanting is the thing you enjoy. And when you finally get it, it wasn't the shining thing you thought it was going to be.

I scratch it with a new vehicle. I have had older model vehicles in the past and I sort of thought of putting new bling on an old vehicle is just throwing good money after bad. Instead I would go through everything I could fix, refurbish or improve in the brakes, lines, bearings (minus engine and transmission) and the such and tried to make the old vehicle as mechanically new as I could. Then I would still go and scratch my itch with a new vehicle...its who I am.

Disagreement example -

I wanted an BMW M3 since I first drove a friend's E36 from San Francisco to Santa Cruz to Monterey in 1998.

When they came out with the E46 in the flagship color of Laguna Seca Blue, I wanted that.

When I finally took delivery of my Laguna Seca Blue E46 BMW M3 in December 2005, it was everything I thought it would be and more.

Did it help me build wealth? Not at all. Repairs were super expensive but, when you spend 4-7 hours in your car every day, you better drive something you enjoy.

This is true for most, but not all.

I have plenty of savings. I have zero debt. I paid cash for my last Raptor. I've driven Raptors for 8 years (as of February 9) and each time I get in one, I smile. I'm currently looking to upgrade to a Raptor R.

I never figured that I'd live as long as I have, I've had T1 diabetes for 41 years. My sister died from it after 25 years, 25 years is about what most T1's last with the disease. I also have outlived the other 3 members of my extended family diagnosed with the same cancer that I was, my dad lived 5 weeks, my cousin lived 17 months, and another cousin lived 5 months. I'm at over 8 years. That side of the family also has many other cancers.

At some point, diabetes may win. Multiple doctors have told me it's when, not if the cancer returns. I am trying to spend some of my money on things I enjoy while I still can, but balance that with saving for tough times that likely likely accompany then end stage.

I become obsessed. Completely consumed. Months of research to zero in on the make/model/year/trim/color I want. Then daily checking of every car website that exists for as long as it takes to find an example that checks all the boxes with very low miles. I spent ~6 months shopping for my last two toy cars and 3 or 4 months shopping for my last daily driver. The hunt is half the fun.

Guns don't kill people.
Spoons don't make people fat.
Car notes don't alter families futures.

Although I have never had any debt outside of my primary residence, and I likely agree with your approach to financial decisions, I get tired of the virtue signalling and condescending statements about others financial decisions on this Automotive forum.

I was fortunate that my parents had the ability and willingness to pay for my education. I was fortunate that my father learned from his poor financial decisions and taught me from his mistakes, rather than having to learn from my own financial mistakes. Not everyone gets those advantages.

I can be happy and supportive of someone's purchase(s) without projecting my own financial opinions. Everyone should try it.
