To be fair, the OP's question is "what do you do when you get the new car itch". Bob Kelso answered how he handles it.

Giggity

You can get the Jeep back if you want to scratch that itch. I still love it but daily an SUV now and am thinking about moving to a two seater for my fun car.

not on the budget for this year

although my daughter wants it back. She reminds me frequently of "when daddy had the jeep"

Literally watch my families future be completely altered because of car notes. That money can go to more wealth generating vehicles.

I've learned that the wishing and wanting is the thing you enjoy. And when you finally get it, it wasn't the shining thing you thought it was going to be.

Guns don't kill people.
Spoons don't make people fat.
Car notes don't alter families futures.

Although I have never had any debt outside of my primary residence, and I likely agree with your approach to financial decisions, I get tired of the virtue signalling and condescending statements about others financial decisions on this Automotive forum.

I was fortunate that my parents had the ability and willingness to pay for my education. I was fortunate that my father learned from his poor financial decisions and taught me from his mistakes, rather than having to learn from my own financial mistakes. Not everyone gets those advantages.

I can be happy and supportive of someone's purchase(s) without projecting my own financial opinions. Everyone should try it.

Bro. Who am I targeting? I'm talking about myself. To scratch my -me, myself and I's- ****ing itch to either jack off a car salesman every couple of years, or rather find other ways to generate wealth for myself.

To each their own.

My main internet video guilty pleasure is watching the deals shown by Doug Horner at Mercedez Benz of North Olmstead, Ohio.

He lays out the negative equity trap here:

I totally agree with all the above. And to add, my wife and I have worked hard to afford, within reason, just about whatever we want. What is the point in working your butt off for decades to have money and then just sit on it and not enjoy it? You cannot take it with you when you die, so use your money on the things that make you happy.

I have the itch for a Genesis GV80 or a Toyota Capstone (currently drive a 2014 1794 Tundra). I'm a low mileage driver. With that being said, I just ask myself, what is wrong with what I currently have?

My itch has changed over the last decade. I no longer itch for a new DD, rather specific vehicles that serve very different purposes or nostalgic reasons. E.g. a convertible Mustang because it is perfect for the Ozarks, a Wrangler for utility anywhere and simplicity, a '95 OEM 7.3 F250 because it is my all time favorite truck, and a '91 NSX because it is my dream car from age 18. And I am blessed with the ability to scratch that itch.

Edit: Outside of family, friends and country; cars have been the love of my life and I knew and invited the fact that I would be here one day (given the resources).

I have a 2012 Red Tundra, 5.7L 4x4. I smile when I see it in the parking lot at work or HEB every time. I did put on black wheels and 35" tires a few years ago as well as black bull bar (LED doesn't work). It also already had a 2" lift when I got it used. Every now and then I think about upgrading the audio system, but I rarely listen to music when I drive (podcasts) so it wouldn't be worth it. I am thinking of upgrading to the 46-gallon tank one day. I hope to drive that tank for the next 20 years!

My wife has a white 2014 4Runner, and like me she loves it. It's a trail limited 4x4 so leather/nice stitching and handles like a dream on our annual Colorado winter trips! We also put larger tires and the TRD wheels, so it looks nice (also bought used and had ugly black aftermarket wheels). Fits our family of 4 no problem, and if we need extra cargo space, I put the hitch tray on.

So, we have no itch, and with the price of cars now and obviously having no car payment, there is no want of a new car.

A little over 200k. It does have one minor issue with a transmission shudder when in normal drive, but when I put it in "manual" it goes away. I feel that it gets to 5th gear too early to increase fuel economy while in the automatic mode.

Torque converter? I've read to exchange the trans fluid with Toyota ATF WS only at a full capacity exchange. 10-12 quarts (not a power flush, but not a partial drain and fill) and then grease the drive shaft slip yokes.

I have a 2015 with 116k so I'm interested in seeing what issues may pop up down the road.

I had a shudder on my Tundra. Turned out to be the carrier bearing on the driveshaft.

Read TexAgs Automotive Board and see what people are paying for new vehicles. Itch goes away fast.

And their reliability.

EOT as I'm now 2 years past when I had originally planned to replace my current. Such low mileage that I can't justify it.

However, I walked out to the garage a few mornings ago and discovered my windshield will need complete replacement so maybe that's a sign from God. No idea how that happened as I don't drive it that much and the time I drove it before that happened I went about 1 mile and never over 25 mph.

Car was fine when I left it in garage. Two days later I wake up to a massive chip in the middle and a separate 2-foot crack from top right down to middle of windshield. WTH.

Rent a car and get pissed with all the nanny tech.

- Can't pair a Bluetooth device while rolling, for "safety"
- Lane assist that tries to overpower the steering. I'll steer where I want, thank you.
- Auto start/stop (this one really grates on me as I hunt for the disable button and on some occasions can't find it(
- Having to go through endless menus on a giant touchscreen to perform the most basic functions
- Realizing that everything else in the vehicle feels cheap and flimsy because they had to hit a price point while tacking on all of the above

That recent Navigator review someone posted on here may be peak, modern tech design idiocy. I'm not sure why anyone would drive it. The irony of all this nanny tech has made that model, in particular, unsafe to drive with all of its tech distractions.

I've had the same Tahoe since new for 17 years and every time I get the itch, I do something to modify/upgrade. Tires/wheels a couple of times, interior, stereo, brakes/suspension. And now…..a complete drivetrain upgrade.

Making the stock LS 5.3 a 383 stroker+whipple Gen6 blower, CircleD Stage 4 transmission rebuild, 9" rear end, etc, etc. Working to have it done sometime this spring.

A big project, but worth it to me as I'll keep this until I they pry my hands off the steering wheel.

Yeah, I might just drop another boost and/or 10 speed into the Expy if the current drive train gives out. The rest of it is fine. I don't see that much in new vehicles I need or want to deal with. If I can get simple, functional, and reliable, I am content.

When I rented an Audi A6 in Germany last year, the two most annoying nanny tech features were:
  • The flashing warning that you're exceeding the speed limit (in towns and on the Autobahn where there's a posted limit)
  • The lane assist was downright dangerous and I couldn't figure out how to turn it off. Since it was only a rental for a few days, I didn't bother to take the time to YouTube how to turn it off.
The lower tech version was the sticker that warned you not to exceed 210 kmh.

Turns out, the reason was that's all the snow tires were rated for. I drove it up to about 212 kmh (131 mph) before I noticed the sticker (after I stopped - the sticker was blocked from view behind the turn signal).

We drive everything 8-10 years. I have found that at that point the technology has changed enough that I notice the differences plus at 10 years you feel like it is just a matter of time before you get a repair bill larger than the value of the vehicle. I hate buying cars.
