I've been a gmc driver for 10+ years and looking to downsize from a 2500. What are the boards thoughts between the 2026 AT4x (6.2) versus the Raptor 801a (3.5). Debating between these two trucks and looking at reliability, mpg, comfort, and which one might not get stolen lol. Right now sticker is about the same but some gmc dealers are offering up to 10k off the at4x.

If you're breaking ranks test the RHO as well. Raptor will hold its value better so total cost of ownership will be lower

If you want raptor type performance off road then you want the raptor.

If you want to look like you off road, then the AT4X and RHO will serve you just fine

Unless you are going to be racing in sands dunes and taking it off sweet jumps I don't think you really need a raptor.

Probably two people in the country that actually do this. Our neighbor has a maxed-out Raptor with one of those custom extra tire holders in the bed of the truck. It's even one of those Baja editions I think which is above and beyond the normal Raptor.

She's about 65 yrs old.

2500 AT4

You might think you want to downsize until you actually do. You'll be trading that 1500 in a year from now or sooner.

That's my current truck. Don't tow enough anymore and have been having to use more parking garages lately for work/travel etc and it's becoming a huge pita.

No one needs a Raptor.. I replaced my 2020 AT4 with a 21 Raptor and then picked up a 23 Raptor when the market was still pretty stupid on trade value for a fractional difference. That being said my 2023 with 47k miles still retails for about 77-78% of original MSRP. They are great trucks and depreciation curve is minimal.

Get a Raptor. Same MPG and better seats too.

That's what I was getting at. My 250 got totaled and I went down to a half ton because I didn't have a Travel Trailer any more. Even after I leveled it and put bigger tires on I always missed the 3/4. That said, I had a company car at the time so I never had to deal with work issues.

My wife has the 6.2 in her Yukon. It's a really smooth engine with plenty of power to spare. Still I'd probably go with the Raptor. They ride better than any car I've ever driven and as others have said they hold their value incredibly well. They remind me of 4Runners in that I don't know why anyone buys used. If you are going to pay for a car that barely depreciates, buy a new one.

He's not looking at the Raptor R. The RHO beats the ecoboost Raptor and its probably $10k cheaper.

I wasn't referring to straight line speed. The Raptor is wildly more off road capable than the AT4X or the RHO.

None of these trucks are actually fast. The Raptor isn't even the fastest F-150. Just get the truck that makes you feel good. In my neighborhood, the Raptor has replaced the European sports car as the default for midlife crisis car. That's not a knock on it. You can have a cool looking car and still carry your family around. It is why they are supercrew only now.

A tune only RHO runs a 12.4 @ 107 on the street. While this may not be fast on the internet, a 12 sec truck would scare the **** out of most people IRL. A 12 sec vehicle will absolutely wax 95% of the other cars on the road.

They're crapping out left and right? They basically all have issues, especially the 6.2L and 3.0L with bearing failures. The 5.3L is a little more reliable, but is still prone to lifter failure that they've never solved. The 2.7L 4 banger might be the most reliable Chevy engine at the moment.

OP, the 2023+ Raptor should be pretty reliable. At that point they had fixed the cam phaser issues and the 10R80 CDF drum failure. Just make sure you change the oil early and often. Turbos can still fail at any time, just like any turbo vehicle. I highly recommend getting the Ford extended warranty if you're buying new or from a Ford dealership.

Also be aware that you need to change the transmission, transfer case, and differential (both) fluid at least every 50K miles, preferably 30K with the transmission. Additionally the shocks need to be rebuilt every 50K miles. For the latter there's a place here in Texas that will ship you rebuilt shocks, you or a shop installs, and then you ship the originals back. Should be around $1K.

My last truck was a 6.2L Silverado and now I have a 2019 Raptor. Both engines have great torque and decent top end power. My 6.2L got better highway economy, but the average MPG is basically identical. The 6.2L sounds much better, but add a blow off valve and remove the turbo silencers and you won't mind the exhaust sound as much.

If you decide to go with the Raptor and want to tune it, Goosetune is the gold standard. Their website has a lot of good information about Raptor engine mods.

Engine swap the supercharged 6.2L out and put the 6.4L in? I'm a big fan of the 392 engine, but that's a swap I never saw coming.

oh shiz. I see they put a new powertrain in there...

weren't the original ones just the 6.4?

No, they had the supercharged 6.2 their entire production run. It was succeeded by the RHO with the 3.0L HO Hurricane which is more of an ecoboost Raptor competitor, so downmarket from the TRX. There is a new TRX coming out and it's supposed to have another supercharged 6.2L.

If I were to get out of the Raptor and into another expensive truck, I'd be looking real hard at the TRX. So much more reasonably priced on the used market than the Raptor R, which is just insanely expensive.

got it - I'm an idiot. Didn't realize that thing had the supercharger in it the whole time.

I've said it before but if this board is in anyway indicative of real life, then buying a truck of any brand or model is about the dumbest damn vehicle decision anyone could ever make.

This board has scared me from ever buying a truck of any kind. Cam phasers, lifters, transmissions, electronics, spontaneous combustion....trucks got it all bad.

Join the Facebook owners group of any vehicle you want to purchase and after a couple of weeks of reading about everyone's problems you'll save yourself some money by refraining from the purchase.

All brands as a whole are struggling with reliability and issues right now to some degree. There is a whole lot to unpack still from COVID implications to chasing EVs and the lack of combustion engine developments the last few years.

The 3.0 had bearing issues with a bad batch from a supplier that affected a limited number of engines, other than that it's bullet proof.

Far, far from bullet proof. Maybe the old one, but not the LZ0.

GM doesn't even know the build date range for the LZ0 thrust bearing issue.

LZ0 has been out since 2022 and these bearing issues started popping up on late 2025 models.

Which is one reason I delayed replacing my 2016 car in 2023. I also won't be buying American in all likelihood when I plan to get something new in 2027. We shall see what's out then.

I have had multiple gens of raptors, a Ram TRX, and currently drive a 2500 AT4X.

All were fun, all had flaws. Get whatever you like, but the raptors hold their value for some stupid reason.
