I am looking for recommendations for inexpensive new or used options for local driving (ie 1-3 miles from the house) and occasional highway driving (teenage kid uses to drive to school and back). Primarily use DT, but am open to other options to save some $$$.

Explorer currently has the Michelin Defender LTX MS2, but I don't see these tires on Costco or DT anymore? Would be looking for something less than what similar replacements would cost.

Michelin Defender LTX M/S2 | Discount Tire

Were you searching by a specific size? May just be that they didn't have them in the size you were looking for.

I had the DT Pathfinder tire on my F150 for the nearly 4 years I owned it. I was impressed with it. It got a little louder as it got older but as far as I could tell, that was really the only drawback. It held air well, was relatively stable in poor weather, and if you rotate regularly, it won't wear excessively in one area over another.

At least, that was my experience. I was pleasantly surprised with the tire. I probably would have replaced it with a BFG had I kept the truck but I wouldn't have hesitated to put the PF on an older or less driven truck.

Weird, maybe it was the local DT tire that didn't have it. Thanks for setting me straight!
Edit - looks like 245/60/18's may not be available...

You might check tirerack.com You can buy through them, have it shipped to DT, and get it installed with DT's followup service/road hazard protection. I think DT bought them recently though, so there may not be any difference in the inventory system.

Pathfinder ht @Discount tire, or if you want to spend a little more, check out the Yokohama YK CTX. Both are Discount tire exclusives and excellent tires for the money.

Yep that's what I have on my 17 Explorer Sport., the Yokos. Great tires so far, smooth, pretty quiet, cut through the puddles, and hardly seem to be wearing at all.

Ended up going with some Bridgestone Dueler H/P Sport AS on clearance at TireRack, shipping to my local DT for installation.
