This guy is a large buyer of motor oil for an oil change company in the US. A few days ago he made a fairly innocuous tweet that blew up. Following that, several folks noted that their local stores were out or almost out of a lot of oil. Honestly surprised it hadn't been posted here yet. I believe some companies have already released statements that you can use different oil for a change due to this shortage and others may be doing so soon.

Yea idk about all that, but the stocks around my house are absolutely low or out. There were endless photos online of folks buying loads of oil as well, so people may make a run, which could leave regular folks up the creek.

I've always kept enough oil and filters for at least one oil change and service on everything I own on the shelf. Just the way I was taught.

I'm not sure if this is something that's heading our way and we just haven't seen the effects of it yet or just nonsense.

Several of our customers/distributers operations are impacted by base oil feedstock sales curtailment implemented by oil majors in the Houston market (just local firsthand evidence, my understanding is that the allocations are global) . Synthetic lube oils are moving but under strict allocation basis and have been short since early March.

Also, the very common Ford Motorcraff FL-500-S oil filter is out of stock at my local Ford dealer and out of stock online at Ford Parts.

I ordered two off Amazon yesterday for $8.77 each. Now today they've jumped to $12.79.

The FL-500-S is currently $5.48 on RockAuto. It's not free Amazon shipping, but if you are buying multiple items through the same shipping channels, the per-item shipping cost can be minimal.

Unless this one Twitter account has the scoop and everyone else is lying all our providers don't seem too concerned at all right now. Talked with Castrol reps and they're not restricting anything at this point and don't see any signs coming. If anything the only precautions I'm hearing from some WS providers is they're tightening up on ordering amounts/cadence to just discourage hoarding unneeded oil and causing an artificial issue. Shell really isn't offline either. If there is anything causing an issue it's more related to the additives for oil than the actually oil itself and I'm not hearing anything just yet that is concerning there either. As usual this seems overblown.

I was at the Chevron plant in Port Arthur a few weeks ago. There was so much oil in that plant, I'd be shocked if there was a shortage already.

Bought a years worth of oil changes… Costco synthetic and purolator filters. Costco oil was on sale and the filters were inexpensive by the 12pk. That's $17 plus tax per oil change. May be less than a year as I've driven the new officemobile 9K miles in 26 days.
