How much does a slingshot/bench daddy add to your bench press?

I saw this video of Chelsea Savit doing 225 14 times raw on bench

https://instagr.am/p/BSJZgIPBTFG

She then does 315 8 times using a 'bench daddy'

Savit says her goal is to hit 275 in a meet this year.

After seeing her do so well with a 'bench daddy', I have to wonder how much assistance that gear offers a lifter.

Depends on your technique and how it fits.

It helps build your speed and overloading your CNS. If you're a 200 lbs lifter and you've never held 300, you won't know what it is like to hold heavy weight.

It's like using reverse bands but a different feel.

I probably get 75 out of the single ply and 125 double ply with my bench daddy. However, I know how to bench and I know how to bench with gear so I probably get a lot more than most would. And Chelsea is a gifted athlete so percentage wise she probably gets a lot more than me.

Probabaly a novice question in regards to the form in the video. But is their a higher chance of injury arching the back like that?

my thought exactly? i mean the bar moves like 3 inches, is that really a press too?

Actual lifters can probably answer this better than me, but the last time I asked and looked into it, it stems from competition rules that require shoulders and but touching the bench with no requirements for the rest of your back to touch. Allows you to generate more power, use different (maybe bigger?) muscles and it gets your chest closer to the bar so you only have to do half of the rep.

Also didn't mean to try and derail this thread. Just trying increase my knowledge/understanding.

Does this device actually help get stronger? It seems the band is doing a lot of work.

And it's incredible the difference in range of motion between different body measurements. I see these big benchers they only move the bar not even 6 inches. I on the other hand probably move the bar close to 2 feet.

Even doing half the weight of some benches I have seen, I would be doing at least 50% more work and using way more energy than these guys.

Example of work done:

Short range of motion (6 in)
225 lbf * .5 ft * 12 reps = 1350 ft-lbf

Long range of motion (18 in)
185 lbf * 1.5 ft * 5 reps = 1387 ft-lbf

So 5 reps of 185 is more work for someone with long range of motion than 12 reps of 225 is for someone with short range of motion.

Benching like that never impresses me.

That being said, devices like those will help you increase your raw bench, you just need to use them correctly.

Just don't be the guys at my gym who struggle to do a triple with 185, but throw 4 plates on the bar and just unrack and rerack.

How does it help with raw bench?

I'm sure she doesn't care if you are impressed or not.

However she is competing in powerlifting and one of the goals is... benching as much as you legally can. Ishorter range of motion, bigger bench. I wish I could have an arch like that.

For the slingshot as I said earlier, it helps develop your speed and with CNS adaptation.

What Hoosegow said.

I'm a big fan of negatives and static holds on bench and squats.

I am impressed. It's actually very impressive. I have no problems with people adapting to the sport, was just curious how the band helps. And on the range of motion it's just genes, I don't intend to bash someone for being born with short arms. However it is clearly an advantage similar to height in basketball.

From what everyone has said, her arch and form is pretty much perfect.

Think of the difference between doing flat bench press and decline bench press, you can push more weight on the decline. Arching your back like that basically makes the bench press a decline press, and gives a mechanical advantage, so people do it.

If there was a higher chance of injury, I doubt the technique would be as widespread as it is.

That makes sense. Like I said probably a novice question. Thanks for the answer

Snowflake much? Haven't seen anything he said offending, just to the point. Plus he is power lifts for a hobby so when it comes to lifting heavy he is a good resource.

Not a snowflake but if you feel better, good on you.
His snarky remarks to honest questions kind of rule him out as a valued source.

Edit to add, her ass appears to be off the bench.

No, but that was a jackass comment, I'll admit that.

Sometimes I get tired of people being, I don't know what you call it without offending anyone. You push yourself you are going to get aches and pains. I get frustrated and yah, I should of just ignored the thread but that is what I thought.

If you don't want to see me as a source, I really don't care. There are tons better out there that know a helluva a lot more than I do.

I understand Gomez now.

First of all... That chick is a bad ass, but does that lift really count? Her elbows aren't even getting to a 90 degree bend.
bmks270

Chick has the perfect body for bench press. Super short so when she arches her body her butt is conveniently on the bench, and short arms too for a very small range of motion... all makes for her moving a lot of weight from chest to lock out.
Aggietaco

Her cheeks are indeed touching the bench during the actual press.

Again, not a lifter, but if your shoulders are touching the bench, your cheeks are touching the bench, and you start are full arm extension, all you have to do is touch your chest and press up for a rep. Like Hoosegrow said earlier, she is doing what is required by the rules of the competition to push as heavy a weight as possible. I doubt she would argue that there aren't more difficult ways to do a bench press. Similar to the technique involved with performing kipping pull ups for speed versus a legitimate pull up that is more strength oriented.

I know a couple of powerlifters and they said the arch in your back goes back to ancient architecture...the roundedness gives a more stable foundation for all the weight you are lifting...

Back when lifting was discussed way more than it is now, and before Crossfit was anything more than a website where people just went to get a WOD

trenbolone acetate: 50 mg every day x 10 weeks would improve a bench press personal record much???

I say don't do it. Not worth the risk.

Thoughts?

50mg too low, need to go 100mg. Although you could do the tren enanthate route so you don't have to inject every day or every other day.

Personally, I don't care much for powerlifting style bench presses. It looks as ridiculous as crossfit style kipping pullups just with less injury risk.

I'm thinking about getting the Original Sling Shot in 2XL (I'm 5'11, 218lbs).

I've never done more than 300 lbs raw (touch and go) and would like to get the feel of 315. I would use it to supplement and not a regular routine (meaning weekly).

Been a while since this thread had action, any updates/comments from anyone?
