My first encounter with the topic was actually listening to Rush when he made fun of it for a number of reasons.

I got older and then I started having just horrible bouts with it. Then found out my family has it on both sides and my half sister also has it. My maternal grandfather probably died a few years early from his complete inability to sleep towards the end of his life.

I think I have finally found a solution and I am hoping there are others here that can help me out by trying it.

So real simple, the next time you have the problem do any type of stretch you might know for the psoas muscle. If you don't know one I normally sit on the edge of chair, do my standard leg cross making sure to keep your left ankle on your right knee, and vice versa. Then grasp each of your palms and press your elbow against your knee forcing it down. Repeat for the other side.

I normally hold the stretch for 10-15 seconds per side and repeat two times.

This has completely stopped the problem for me. Simple easy and free. Hoping I get some others to try and report back.

Also might as well post. The family remedy that seemed to help a bit but not completely was to drink a sports drink or a little pickle juice.

Restless leg syndrome is very frequently related to low iron stores. Anyone who is having trouble with it should probably get a serum ferritin level checked, and treat anything less than 75 with supplemental iron. It can make a huge difference.

First post on TexAgs just to say I have RLS in my family - nightly stretching definitely helps, as does potassium and/or magnesium. Our iron levels have always been fine; it seems to be more related to hormone fluctuations. Not fun diagnosis.
