Having issues with the IT band in the right hip and knee area. The doctor gave steroids a pack and felt great afterwards for a few weeks. A couple of months later the pain returned and was given a shot in my knee. Again felt great for a few months now having the same pain again. Most painful at night when sleeping. I have been to physical rehab. still no relief. Doctor advised pain cream and NASIDS. Any advice would be helpful Thanks

A good physical therapist should be able to get you on the right track if you're really sticking with the home exercises they recommend. You probably need a lot of strengthening in the lateral hip.

Can you recollect when/how the pain came on? What is your daily activity level?
Unless it's the result of a single, specific impact I'd attribute it to general leg tightness and recommend foam rolling quad, calves and glutes then following up with a series of stretches.
I would assume this is the same advice a good PT would give.

If there was a specific incident, I'd say find an Airrosti office and let their chiro really work you over; then they'll give you a foam roller, lacross ball and targeted at-home exercises.

How do you know you have IT Band syndrome? Where does it hurt exactly? You bow legged?

I like to do a pigeon pose stretch from yoga to work that area when I cool down after riding my bike. Seems to help lengthen and relax the area.

Injury happened when I stepped off a tractor and my knee felt funny and in pain. Went to where the aggies go to get cured when injuries happen, Central Texas Sports Medicine And Orthopedics. Was told knee is tight IT band injury. However at 70 still in when I have to go down on my knees.

None of that sounds like IT band syndrome, both in suspected cause, and your described exacerbating factors. I'd consider a second opinion.

IT band syndrome is most typically an overuse injury that we see in runners and cyclists, and almost never has a single inciting event that the patient can point to. Pain is usually located on the lateral aspect of the knee and is exacerbated with movements like single leg squats.

It's always possible you have it, but we physicians are prone to typical human errors, myself not excluded.

In that case, I'd definitely recommend an Airrosti consult. They've brought me back from a number of different injuries over the years and even though I basically pay out of pocket, It's been a 100% worth it based on the results.

Yeah this is most likely not an IT Band issue. Sounds like a joint or meniscus issue based on your description and your age.

x rays were taken and showed nothing but some arthritis in the knee no tears or other problems shown. Also no swelling or fluid on the knee given injection and knee felt fine for several weeks. Then minor pain at night and stiffness when I get up. Minor pain during the day and issues of getting up and down on the knee. The left knee is fine with no issues. Any recommendations in katy/bcs/brenham area for second opinion. Any help welcomed.

I second the Airrosti recommendation, they helped me out with an old injury that happened to be an IT Band issue.

Agree, except I'd find a chiropractor in network that does the same stuff.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough
