Has anyone here been through the process of acquiring coaching certifications?

Which ones?
Thoughts?
Did you acquire them to augment a business or start a new one?

General feedback appreciated

I have rrca and USA cycling. Honestly, I didn't learn much in either that i didn't already know, but both were level 1. Ultimately decided to not pursue coaching as a business. I found I wasn't great at remote coaching and don't have bandwidth for consistent in-person. I did quite a bit of in person when I was in NYC.

USA cycling cert was online but rrca was in-person. At the time, there was no level 2 for rrca.

Renaissance Periodization offered a nutrition coaching course over a year ago, and I completed their first cohort (they only had two). They wanted it to be on par with the course that Precision Nutrition offered, but I have no idea how similar they are. I took the course to get a baseline understanding of coaching to start my own side business

I have RRCA, like OO, not sure I learned much from it. I still coach remotely but it's mostly small (I have a soft cap at 10 that I've only exceeded once) and I don't have the desire to grow it.

Getting certs won't immediately open doors or have clients flooding in. It seems like there are a ton of health coaches out there. I'm in the RRCA coaching group and about once a month we'll get a post from someone saying "I have my cert, now what" alluding to this fictional floodgate of clients ready to come onboard.

What's the goal with getting the certification?

great question. Not really sure. Learn. Learn how to train myself better. Maybe pivot to new career in 10 years or so.

Not that this much help as the signup is closed, but Menno Henselmans offers a certification course designed to keep you up to date with the latest science on hypertrophy, strength training, nutrition etc. Menno is a big evidence based guy which I love. He teaches trainers and those interested how to actually read studies as well. Claims to offer a marketing part as well. Menno is a legit guy. A great follow and the guy really does keep up with things and helps me understand the latest science is saying.

He should have another certification course next year so it's worth following if that is stuff you're interested in.

I thought hard about it. I just feel that most PT Certs are nothing more than a course and test without much to keep the trainer very up to date with things. That's why Menno's cert appeals to me. And most trainers won't try to actually stay up to date. While there are very smart ones out there, there are a lot of not so smart ones too. I think it's why I see so much ***ery when watching trainers train clients. Try talking to trainers and bring up the recent studies and evidence on stretch mediated hypertrophy and many will just look confused at you. I am currently a teacher and used to be a trainer for a couple of years. I'm honestly done with teaching. But not really interested in going back to gen pop training. I mean, it's fine but with young kiddos and a wife working high up in marketing at her company (there's talk of making her Marketing Director) and I cannot commit to training nights and weekends and honestly don't want to. I love my nights and weekends and want to keep those for me. I truly love fitness and it's my passion but finding a way to monetize it has been an issue.
