I abstain from alcohol every year during Lent. It's a nice way to drop 10lbs.

January is still hunting and football season, so hard to not have a few drinks here and there. But I'm really trying to limit to Fri/Sat only in January. Holiday season was as usual, way too many consecutive days of drinks (threw in a 12 day trip to London/Paris in early December) and too much food.

So far so good.. first week was a breeze. I ate and drank too much from Thanksgiving onwards so I was looking forward to a reset. I find that going to zero is easier than limiting it to 2-3 drinks a week.

Ramping up cardio and lifting. Not snacking at night. Both easier with not drinking.

Nice. I have an Army Fitness test coming up so I'm training for that soon.

Agreed. Cardio and lifting will burn them calories right off

Down about 8lb in a week - sleeping great

For the THC dabblers above, if you can find the 8th Wonder Ocho Verde in a bottle (mainly Houston), it's nice for mixing into "ranch waters" or other mocktails

I had the OG Delta 8 water they had a while back.

Good stuff. But I can't dabble due to Army piss tests.

Maybe when I retire I can smoke the good stuff

Day 10. Ive gotten about the best week of sleep that I have in about a year. Every night full nights rest, wake up feeling ready to go and motivated. I had to go get spring mix from the store to make the salad for dinner and thought to myself why not swing by and grab a few 19 oz beers anda bottle of wine my wife to watch the Cotton Bowl. Nope, took a hard right to the checkout and just came back with the cowfood.

wife commented that she thought i might have been tempted to cheat (I was), but she's glad I didnt because how great she feels lately too. Nice to have some positive reinforcement.

I've been good for 11 days. Was tough going to eat Mexican food last night after a long week of work and not grabbing a margarita or two. Nice to have a check about 30 bucks cheaper than normal with me and the wife not drinking right now. Definitely sleeping better too. I'm going through the 23rd only. We have a work retreat trip on the 24th and definitely going to partake with the guys. Think I'm going to definitely back off on the booze going through 2025 though. Feel better and know I can do it.

I recommend getting a sleep study done if you suck at sleeping.

CPAP is life changing and can add years to your life !

Good job. Not that you need it to tell a difference, but I have a Garmin watch and it gives a sleep score. I was always amazed that the watch knew even when I had only a couple beers. Any alcohol at all and it would tell me I did not get as good of a sleep.

I second this. My GF would too - she gets a better sleep now because I don't snore with the CPAP on.

Yep...eye opening how that and the "body battery" score is affected by booze.

Day 12 for me. I honestly couldn't tell you the last time since 18 yrs old I went 12 days without drinking. Got blood work done back in early Dec and liver levels were high! Have been before but I didn't think much about it honestly. I would drink vodka or tequila nightly - even finish most night off sipping tequila and my pours are one you won't find at any bar! Sleeping SO much better, have lost weight no doubt, complexion is much improved and wife says I even smell better! To say I was/am a functioning alcoholic is probably an understatement. I haven't had any cravings, in fact, even the thought of a taste and then the post morning feeling has become a major positive. I plan on going through Jan and will continue until I feel I want one, if that never comes then so be it. I do take a gummy in the evening to relax and sleep but I don't wake up feeling it. Great topic and best of luck to everyone.

Same here!!
Here is an excerpt from a the sleep foundation that explains why that is:

Quote:

The typical sleep cycle begins with three non-rapid eye movement (NREM) stages of sleep and ends with rapid eye movement (REM). During sleep, the body cycles through all of these stages every 90 to 120 minutes, with NREM sleep dominating the first part of the night and REM increasing during the second part of the night. Each stage is necessary for sleep to feel refreshing and for vital processes like learning and memory consolidation to occur.

When you go to bed with alcohol in your system, you're likely to experience more N3 sleepknown as "deep sleep"and less REM sleep than usual, at least initially. Later in the night, once your body has metabolized the alcohol, you're likely to experience a rise in N1 sleep, the lightest stage of sleep. This can lead to frequent wakings and fragmented, low-quality sleep.

Nice work. Me too.

Question for people who have done it before:

I have lost maybe 6 lbs so far (have also been better on diet and exercise). I seem to recall people in past years say they lost a few pounds in the first week or two but then the weight started "falling off" after that.

I know it varies based on a variety of factors but has anyone else experienced greater weight loss after week 2 or so? Or is it more linear where you chip away week by week at a pretty even pace?

Work dinner last night. (FREE) Drinks were flowing.

Sipped on unsweet tea. Got home and fell asleep almost immediately and woke up feeling amazing.

I survived a work trip to Utah and back.

No cravings at the airport or two nights alone in a hotel room. Found an AA meeting to attend Friday night. Was very helpful.

70 days. There are some dark times. Forced to sit with unpleasant thoughts I used to just drink away. Still better than before.
