I am looking for recommendations for a gastroenterologist who has a focus in his/her practice on cirrhosis of the liver. (I will be traveling from Huntsville.)

Am most interested in the BCS or possibly the Conroe/Woodlands area.

You can narrow your search to a hepatologist if you want. They focus primarily on the liver.

If the cirrhosis has already been worked up and diagnosed and is clinically stable and lower risk, you might be able to find some GI to manage it. But most of the docs that manage cirrhosis will be at transplant centers. And if the cirrhosis decompensates they would be sending you to a transplant center anyway. So you would generally be looking at the major cities - Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Antonio. I think Baylor Scott & White in Temple may have one. They may have some liver disease offices in the Woodlands, but I would assume that these are just satellite offices for the programs in Houston.

Thank you for your response. A transplant is not an option for me due to age basically and other health issues. Think I just need a more refined diagnosis and management.

Sorry to hear. But still, most hepatologists will be at a transplant capable center. Most people they see don't need a transplant, but that is just where they are located.

True but not always. We have two hepatologists in my 200,000 city. However, they are very booked. May take 6 months to get in to see one.

Probably better luck in the larger city centers. It is true though, absolutely, that you can start with a general GI doc and get their recommendations on how to proceed. GI in general is an excellent place to start.
