I let the flu B get the best of me before going in this week. tested for flu b and have bronchitis.

I was given prednisone and bromfed. Two days later I can feel my chest being even heavier than before.


The NP told me to not worry about taking OTC drugs so i am assuming that is what science says to do. But two days in...I need the phlegm to losen and about to supplement.


Anyone else been in this situation?

I got it this year as well. Three weeks in, I was still having a nasty productive cough. I decided to scope myself in the office and saw this stuff in my trachea:

I finally caved in and went on an antibiotic and a steroid inhaler. It was the first time I had taken an antibiotic in 20 years. I spoke one of my Infectious Disease colleagues, he is seeing the same thing. The flu and the current Covid variant and Metapneumoviris are leaving people with nasty bronchitis that lasts for weeks.
As an aside, it is harder to scope yourself and take a picture of your findings than I was anticipating. Just in case anyone was thinking of doing it.

Couple OTC things you can try to help. Probably Mucinex, and some sort of nasal spray or rinse - could be flonase, ocean spray or a neti pot. I think they still sell Primatene or Bronkaid, which are both OTC bronchodilators. Regarding the chest, unless you're wheezing, probably not a whole lot to do. Give it at least another week or so and see, if it gets worse, or you develop a new round of fevers with it, see about getting a chest xray.

That probably looked a lot better on your monitor while doing the scope. I can't quite tell what you're looking at that prompted antibiotics. Is there a chunk of mucous in there, perhaps?

And yeah, this year's flu A is especially horrible. I'm seeing young and healthy individuals ending up hospitalized, some even in the ICU, due to resulting multifocal pneumonia.

Yeah, about 3 or 4 tracheal rings down along the anterior wall. It's hard to get close enough to get a good picture of what's going on below the cords without triggering laryngospasm. That stuff was brewing for weeks. All in all, it was probably a 6-week illness. Sitting in a steam room was probably the most helpful thing I did, I would highly recommend it for anyone having the same issues.

i'm going to let it ride tonight and may be going for an OTC tomorrow morning.

I have one kid that has been out of sorts and just slightly down for 3 weeks. assuming he had it too.


Last week, I had three big meetings at work and two important kid events so i just toughed it out and it all snowballed the second i got done with the last event. I was awake less than 3 hours from Friday 9pm and Sunday 730am. No telling how many people i passed the bug to last week not thinking i was really sick.

Yall seen anything going around where you get 1-3 days of mainly fatigue with mild congestions/runny nose/cough?

I got hit with it last week, and a coworker did as well. Fatigue was the biggest issue, but cleared up in 48-72 hours. Congestion was minimal.
