Im ready to give sobriety a go. Im still in my late 20's so I think it would be beneficial to start now. I have a binge drinking issue and always look forward to the next reason for a drink. Aggie sports and golf are two events that are going to be really hard for me to not drink while participating in. But I want to do this so I'm giving it a shot. Last drink was 5/13/25. We'll see if I can keep this going.

It's gonna really suck come football season when I would usually hit the chicken for drinks before the game and keep the drinking going during the game at Kyle haha. But I either do this or don't.

Good luck and God bless. I don't know anyone who has gotten sober that has regretted it.

I hope so. I may try and go golf this afternoon without beers. Sounds like not as much fun, but from what I understand this is the lie that is alcohol. And I have to push through that.

If you have any doubt in your mind that certain activities may trigger the desire or make you crave it out of habit, I'd avoid them altogether for awhile.

Try to form some new habits. I would go on 30 minute walks every day in the evening, around the time my mind would start to wander down that path.

Some debate on whether using non-alcoholic beer is good or bad, but I've found that it helps scratch the itch and I particularly enjoy them right after a hard workout. Your mileage may vary.

Might be easier to just give up Aggie football. I'm pretty close to doing that.

But a more serious reply, hang in there and take control!

God bless you through and through. I wish my sister had made that decision a few years ago. She might still be alive.

Golfing this afternoon. Plan on taking Heineken 0.0's.

This is a huge step for me.

one of my best friends is about to have a baby, but she survived on NA beers cause she's really big in the concert scene, would it be helpful if I asked her what her favorites were?

I have tried multiple NA brews from Athletic brewing company and enjoyed them all.

If you can resist temptation, Total Wine & More has a great selection. I was shocked by the variety when I went in there and shopped around.

You could always do an online order from there and just do pickup too.

Great idea. I drank a ton of Miller Lite, Bud light, Dos Equis, and Modelo. Those were my main beers. So I would love something that can come close to those.

I know corona makes a NA, but IIRC it is technically .6% ABV so still some alcohol. I'm a little skeptical about that idea of being sober but still taking in even trace amounts of alcohol.

Yes, that is something that is going to be a personal decision you have to make - everyone feels differently about it.

Athletic has beers in those same styles.

If you're worried about it, err on the side of caution as long as you need to. Better to be safe than sorry.

On one of my old attempts to sober up, I had gone about 6 months and had a buddy hand me a drink that I did not know had alcohol in it - one sip and a week later I found myself in old habits.

Think of it this way.

This is a battle with your mind (assuming you are not full on withdrawing from alcohol). Who is going to win? You or mind?

(I quit using smokeless tobacco, and I made a break through when I realized that I was fighting myself on those cravings. Once I was able to isolate the cravings and that urge as something separate from myself, I was easily able to fight it. I know this is weird, but it worked for me).

I'm gonna tell you… as somebody who used to be prone to a binge myself, I know binge drinkers tend to hang with binge drinkers. And being sober amongst a lot of binge drinkers is brutal. I'm telling you this because if you are serious about this, you probably are going to figure out, people are what trigger it more than events and go from there.

I'm about 9 months sober and no regrets. Was going to do it for a month, then 2 months, then past Christmas, and just kept going. I do a lot of travel for work, hang out with people drinking, sometimes go to bars, and no desire to drink. With the choices of non alcoholic beer I can still get the taste of beer that I like without any consequences. I still am around binge drinkers and get annoyed with them getting hammered.

I have 2 coworkers that are in their 40s and 50s starting have have major health issues from drinking. It a careful reminder to take care of yourself when you see someone at that age with heart failure and liver problems

True. My sister kept drinking after losing 7 units of blood because of an ulcer and then being told by doctors more than once over the next few months that she needed a liver transplant. The last time I saw her was in the hospital, where I heard her blow off a doctor telling her just that.

A month later, she died at home in her sleep, apparently because of liver failure. She was only 49.

Good Times pilsner might be the absolute best NA I've had and I've had a ton. Problem is I've only found it in variety packs at Costco and the others in that pack are only so so.

Thank you all for the encouragement.

Went and golfed with a couple friends, not a lick of alcohol. I drank Heineken 0.0's. Didn't hold back on those not gonna lie. Friends stopped at the turn for beers, I held strong. It was hard but dang it felt good to go home sober. Another plus was I parred 16,17, 18. Not sure I have ever parred 3 holes in a row but today I did. We won't discuss the front 9! Lol

You know, time is the one thing we can't make more of.

Quitting drinking is probably the closest thing you can do to create time - not only will you likely live longer, but you'll stop losing time and memories from blacking out and sleeping till 1 pm or floating through life hungover 6 hours a day.

On top of NA beers, you might try some flavored waters like LaCroix, Polar, Bubbly, etc. I find that the flavor there and the carbonation scratches an itch, and a plus is you get hydrated. Throw it in a koozie and no one can tell what you are drinking if your friends are prone to pressuring you (hopefully they would support you though).

Will be two years for me on July 11th and still one of the hardest things I've done. Very hard to keep it going when you're out with friends or coworkers but the Heineken 0 and Ultra 0s taste so close to the real thing I don't even miss it most the time.

Man I love that you brought that up, I have been drinking a ton of carbonated waters for a few years now. Love them. Right now I have lime LaCroix in the fridge. Weirdly enough my favorites are Waterloo. I am trying spin drift again soon (tried it awhile back but didn't like it too much).
