Any physiatrists or similar doctors on this board? Or doctors familiar with MS?

I have been running 4 miles a day for 15 years (last 3 years been running substantial hills). I never stretched. Only issues I have ever had is 1-2 times a year lower back will feel like something is squeezing or compressing between vertebrae. Pain is such that I have to stop running for a few days, but no issues after getting back to running. 2 months ago, right knee started hurting out of the blue. After two weeks on the Peloton with no pain, went to a sports medicine doctor who diagnosed with runners' knee and gave cortisone shot in "fat pad." A few days later I tried to run again. I made it 2 days (4 miles each), but too much discomfort, so I stopped for about a week and started an aggressive stretching routine for my legs. When I got back to running, I started have discomfort in both my hamstrings. I also started having pain in right hamstring when driving a car. The hamstring immediately starts "pulling". I had pretty severe hamstring pain when I would start running, but it would go away completely after I got about a mile into the run. After running my legs were extremely weak and stiff. Like an idiot, I ran through some pretty good pain until it was just too much. A few days later, I woke up in the night with substantial warm burning and tingling in both legs. Pretty scary because it made no sense to me. The warm tingling has been ongoing for about 2 weeks now, and legs feel weak during the day. However, I have no other issue. No coordination issues. No falling. I'm walking appx 3 miles a day. After doing some AI research (I know doctors love that), it appears like it could be classic case of radiculopathy with nerve hypersensitivity. Anyway, the sports medicine doctor seems completely baffled for some reason. He ran a bunch of blood tests and they were all normal. The he says it could be MS. This obviously has me totally freaked out and I can't get into see a different doctor for 2 more weeks. Anyone have any insight? 49 years old. Class of 1998.

It doesn't sound like radiculopathy or MS from your description

Neuro could MRI your T/L-spine +/- C to check,
Maybe some lab work

Would depend on your exam tho

I am an MS specialist. I doubt that this is MS although within the realm of possibility.

As noted by the other neurologist above, you need spine imaging. The lumbar MR will show the lumbar nerve roots inside and exiting from the spinal canal. Would have to be a pretty substantial disc herniation to be compressing nerve roots going to both legs but this is an appropriate thing to rule out.

BTW, there is a 100% chance that the MRI will show some degree of degenerative changes, as is the case in every 49 year old. Question is whether they are proportionate to your symptoms. If not, need to image the cervical and thoracic spine to look for spinal cord abnormality. Lumbar MRI will not be informative regarding possibility of MS as MS is a disease of the brain and spinal cord, and you see only the very end of the cord on a lumbar MRI.

Thanks for the responses. I truly appreciate it. I'll post the results of the MRI if there is anything interesting. The good news is that whatever is going on is getting better every day. Almost like 3 steps forward, one step back, but progressively improving. This morning is by far the best the legs have felt since the tingling started. I had minor tingling last night and legs do not feel very weak at all today. I'm obviously not running anymore but still walking 3 miles a day (3 separate 1-mile walks). I am about to head out now for the first walk of the day. My guess is I will have little to no weakness at all after the walk because walking always makes the legs improve. Thanks again for you opinions. TexAgs is the best!
