My wife (in her 40s) got hearing aids <2 years ago, had the same reaction. Her doc advised her that she would be overwhelmed at first, but her brain would adjust to taking in all the auditory data with time. The hearing doc also advised that they could "step up" how much ambient noise could be picked up and passed on over time, like working your way up from a low intensity to higher intensity as tolerance allows.
Also, if your hearing aides have the feature, you can have your doc advise you on different sound profiles that adjust how much your devices pass through based on the scenario (e.g., if you're in a crowded dining room, you can "dial down" the intensity, versus a more intimate environment, movie theater, concert hall, etc.). My wife's hearing aides sync to an app via Bluetooth, so she's able to do this on the fly from her phone. Something to look into.
Congrats, and hope this helps.
