Any Celiacs on here? Built a free grocery scanner for my MIL, want y'all to have it.

I was told I should cross post this here as well. So here goes!

My mother-in-law was diagnosed with Celiac a few years ago, and I quickly learned that grocery shopping with that diagnosis is a complete nightmare. You end up staring at labels for 5 minutes trying to figure out if "yeast extract" or "natural flavors" is going to make you sick.

To help her out, I spent the last few months building a free tool that parses ingredient lists and cross-references them to flag hidden gluten. I recently made it public for anyone to use:

https://glutensense.org

You can search manually or use it on your phone as a barcode scanner in the aisles. It'll tell you if a product is Safe, Caution, or Not Safe, and highlight the exact problem ingredients.

I've got the backend processing about 1,000 new products a week, and the database just crossed 6,000 items.

My ask: If you, your spouse, or your kids are gluten-free, please feel free to use thisI hope it makes your grocery runs a little easier!

Also, if anyone just wants to poke around, search for some random pantry items, and try to break the search engine so I can fix the bugs, I would really appreciate the feedback.

Thanks!

This is outstanding! We have good friends whose young son was recently diagnosed, and they are learning to navigate everything that comes with that. My wife and I are voluntarily gluten-free and have been helping where we can, so I sent my buddy the link straight away. Thank you!

Thank you for taking a look. I am still in the process of adding more products. Just scaling up to ~1,000/week starting this week. Only have just under 6,000 currently so there is a big grocery to data gap right now.

Currently working on ingredients OCR so if a product is currently not on the site, you can scan ingredient list and it will parse it the same way individual products are rated as Safe/Caution/Not Safe, and highlight ingredients that are gluten, possible hidden gluten risks, etc.

Wow, this is incredible. I was diagnosed a few years ago, and this will be so helpful.

You must really love your MIL

It's growing. May not be totally usable now as there are big data gaps in products that haven't been added to the database yet, but it is growing daily.

If anyone scans upcs, it will now automatically import and run those upcs and add a page for that product if there is enough data to publish it within ~1 hour.

We used a similar app called Fig that allowed any allergy. It does cost money to do a lot of scans, but it was helpful at first adjusting to my daughter getting diagnosed as lactose intolerant. We don't use it anymore
