Jefferson was odd in a number of his beliefs (particularly about the economy) and a walking contradiction, but he was extremely intelligent and a brilliant thinker.
As for the French Revolution, the underlying class, economic, and demographic dynamics were vastly different than in the colonies. However, the elites who led the first revolution (the Tennis Court Oath, the Declarations of the Rights of Man, etc) drew heavily off of the philosophical arguments made in our Revolution. Recognizing where cultural differences existed, they proposed a government very much like the British system.
