Looks like someone made off with the P-38s arsenal of machine guns that were located just forward of the cockpit, which also appears to be missing its seat and probably a lot of its instrumentation.

They may have salvaged some of the stuff after the crash. It was never really "lost" it was just not worth the effort to recover the whole thing.
