On Thursday, October 15, 1942, three brave Doolittle Raiders were executed by the Japanese in Shanghai, China: The 3 Doolittle Raiders were executed in the Kiangwan Cemetery, Shanghai, China in accordance with Japanese military tradition: they were forced to their knees, blindfolded with their arms tied behind them, then shot simultaneously by three soldiers with rifles in the center of their foreheads.

Sergeant Harold Althouse Spatz (Crew 16)

Lieutnant William Glover Farrow (Crew 16)

Lieutnant Dean Edward Hallmark (Crew 6)

Captured after the daring Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942, these men endured harsh imprisonment before being taken from their cells and executed. Their deaths marked the darkest day in the history of the Doolittle Raidersa tragic reminder of the human cost of courage.

We honor their memory, their sacrifice, and the legacy of all 80 men who volunteered for a mission that changed the course of World War II.

After the Doolittle Raid, Captain Robert Manning Gray (May 24, 1919 October 18, 1942) remained in the China-Burma-India Theater, based in India. Tragically, he was killed on October 18, 1942just before his 24th birthdaywhen his B-25 bomber crashed during a combat mission over Assam, near Burma. His remains were later returned to the U.S. and buried in his hometown of Killeen, Texas.

His heroic story was immortalized in the 1944 film Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo, in which he was portrayed by actor Robert Mitchum. Six years later, in 1948, the Air Force honored Captain Gray by naming the new flying facility near Killeen Robert Gray Air Force Base.
