If any of you are in the Houston area (Harris County), you'll want to watch for this historic aircraft flyover for the 75th Anniversary:

https://www.lonestarflight.org/fight-finish-flyover-fri-may-8-1145-am

The fleet of more than two dozen historic warbirds include:

B-25 'Devil Dog', Grumman HU-16 Albatross, P-51 Mustang, P-63 King Cobra, SB2C Helldiver, CAF Tora Group, C-45 Twin Beech, T-6 Texan, BT-13 Valiant, L-17 Navion, T-34 Mentor, Yak 52 and more.

Hoping the B17 flys. I've seen it every now and again flying around. Slept under it last year at a Cub Scout overnighter too

When I lived in San Marcos we would always see B17's fly on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and others.

It was really cool to hear those engines as they flew over the ball fields

I'll be sitting in a lawn chair in my yard with my camera.

Is this also the event where the Thunderbirds and Blue Angels will be doing their Texas tour?

When I worked at one of the chemical plants in Texas City, I always wanted to get the f out of there as quickly as possible, except one day when, as I was approaching my truck, I heard a familiar sound, and looked up to see the CAF's B-17 "Texas Raiders" approaching. I stood there and soaked it in. A few years ago, I had an opportunity to take a tour through her at an airshow here in Katy. I'm not fat by any stretch, but I had to suck my gut in just to squeeze through the bomb racks on either side of the walkway over the bomb bay. And then, when the B-17 was getting ready to take off for another destination, I got to stand a good ways behind her as those four R-1820 Cyclone radials fired up; the noise and wind those engines put out is amazing, even from many feet behind.

I work in 9 Greenway Plaza. With any luck I'll be able to see them on two legs of their route. Gonna take my Nikon DSLR and a telephoto lens to work Friday.

No connection. Lone Star Flight Museum is pure local.

Judging from the map, I should be able to see at least two legs if the sky is clear, though my roof ain't quite as high as Greenway 9

I'll be trying to watch from a plant in Texas City Friday. Since Dickinson is the furthest south the come I should be able to see them if I do some climbing.

Also just a plug for the LSFM but it's a pretty neat place. Once all this Covid stuff clears up I intend to pay for a ride on their B17. My buddy at the plant is a huge plane nerd and he went to OshKosh and got to ride in FiFi (B-29). I was pretty jealous.

This is a bucket list item for me as well.

Can you imagine being near an airfield in England when entire squadrons took off?

Nice, but doesn't quite do what the real thing would. Daughter was on a cadet deployment to Qatar, and they took her group out to the side of the runway to watch a B-1 take off for a mission. She said you felt it, more than heard it. I suspect you get the same effect with being under a few hundred radial engines.

I don't think Security will allow me onto the roof of 9 Greenway. I'm going to be on the top deck of the Greenway garage at Richmond and Edloe. Should have a fairly unobstructed view from there.

Looking forward to it. Will definitely hear them before we see them.

Saw a couple birds on a practice run yesterday. Got my attention.

100%. We live on the Pearland/Friendswood border and a few years back heard (a bit before we saw) 4 or 5 Japanese planes for the Wings Over Houston Pearl Harbor scenario. Pretty cool to look up and see the planes with the big red meatball flying fairly low in formation.

Mentioning B-17's.

I was watching a program on the No1 Royal Air Force Training base in Terrell. In their museum, they have a huge wall map with the out line of Europe overlying the Southern US to give their trainees perspective of their training flights. It really did give me perspective.

When I think of Strategic Bombing, I always envision Intercontinental flights. The bombing sorties in WWII were like flying from DFW (London) to Little Rock, Austin or Abilene (Berlin)

In the ETO. In the PTO, it was more like DFW to Seattle.

Yeah, I get you there. But when you really study the map of Europe, London really isn't that far from Berlin. But like Canyon said, the PTO was a far larger map.

Pics from the Fight to the Finish Flyover (not the greatest pics, the planes were a mile or so away and these have been digitally cropped).
