The Mexican-American war is really the only war in US history that i know very little about.

Does anyone have a book or three they can recommend?

Just a terrific read. Very cool to see many of the future Civil War leaders learning their trade as junior officers. The book gives a pretty holistic account of the events leading up to war, and the conduct of the war itself in Texas, Mexico and California.
